Wayland - Fairbanks adds administrative office and classrooms in city
FAIRBANKS - The Fairbanks campus of Wayland Baptist University has opened a new main office and classrooms at 3419B Airport Way (in Washington Plaza) for added convenience to students. A grand opening event will be held July 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with refreshments served.
The campus has been located primarily on Eielson Air Force Base, with a satellite office at Fort Wainwright, since 1985. Originally, the campus was a satellite of the Anchorage campus, which opened in the fall of 1985 with help from Dr. John Allen, then-executive director of the Alaska Baptist Convention and a Wayland alumnus. The Fairbanks campus has been independent since August 1999, with Steve Burger serving as dean of the campus. The campus currently enrolls more than 250 students.
"I believe that Wayland Baptist University's Fairbanks campus opening of an office in Fairbanks will give the working adult in the community a great chance to finish their education and get a bachelor's degree," Burger said. "Wayland - Fairbanks accomplishes this by offering a flexible schedule of class offerings in the evening and weekends."
Burger said the new location will offer easier access for local residents who might be interested in pursuing a college degree or finishing one previously begun. Satellite offices will still be located at Eielson and Ft. Wainwright.
Wayland's external campus programs such as Fairbanks cater to adults by offering convenient classes and making sure they get the credit they deserve.
"Wayland is able to take into account prior learning both in the academic setting and in the workforce, applying this toward a degree program," Burger explained. "The working adult returning to acquire a bachelor's degree will be afforded this education within a Christian environment, blending academic excellence with Christian values."
Fairbanks is one of 11 external campuses under the Wayland Baptist University system, headquartered in Plainview, Texas. Wayland also has campuses in Hawaii, Arizona, New Mexico and four others in Texas.
