Passion Week at Wayland

In celebration of the Easter holiday, Wayland Baptist University's Plainview campus will host Passion Week activities April 7-11.

The purpose of the week, according to Baptist Student Ministries director Tommy Foster, is to bring awareness to the true meaning behind Easter - the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. By organizing events, students and others are able to focus on the sacrifice and hopefully come away changed.

"My hope and prayer is that Passion Week will be exactly what it says: it will awaken on our campus a passion for Christ," Foster said.

The week will begin on Sunday, April 8, with Wayland students conducting an outreach project to the Plainview community by placing Easter door hangers at residences.

On Monday and Tuesday, April 9 and 10, activities planned include a prayer tent and three crosses in the marsh area between Mabee Learning Resources Center and the Moody Science Building. A "Jesus" character will be making random campus appearances and the "Jesus" film will be shown in campus dorms.

A new event added last year - evening Coffee Houses - will be reprised this year as well. Those events will be held from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. both nights at Broadway 2000, located at 622 Broadway. The events will feature various local and student bands performing, with ping pong, pool and other games available as well as coffee, shakes and other snacks for a nominal fee. At 9:30 p.m., a worship service will be held, with noted communicator Jon Randles speaking. Admission is a $1 cover charge for both nights.

On Wednesday, April 11, a sunrise service will be planned on the steps of Harral Auditorium.

That evening at 8 p.m., Christian singer Jennifer Knapp will be in concert in Harral Auditorium, with Bebo Norman opening. Tickets for the concert are $10 for Wayland students and $12 for others. Group tickets purchased in advance will be discounted; tickets will be $15 at the door. Tickets are available at the University Bookstore, Lifeway Christian Store and Family Christian Store in Lubbock, and through the Baptist Student Ministries office at Wayland.

All events are open to the public. For more information on Passion Week events, call the BSM at 296-4998.
