Abercrombies Named Distinguished Benefactors
October 4, 2018
Dr. Gary and Mrs. Janice Abercrombie, a longtime Plainview dentist and his wife, will be honored as Wayland Baptist University’s Distinguished Alumni Benefactor Award winners for 2018 at the homecoming banquet on Friday, October 26.
Gary Abercrombie came to Wayland as an Amarillo native, earning his bachelor’s degree in science in 1973. He was active in the Biology Club, Theta Alpha Psi, Alpha Psi Omega, Student Foundation and Baptist Student Union and was a class officer. After graduating, he attended the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, earning his Doctor of Dental Science degree. He then returned to Plainview to set up his dental practice and has remained both a respected health professional and a humble community servant.
Janice Hudgens Abercrombie came to Wayland from Hale Center, earning her bachelor’s degree in 1974. She was a cheerleader, a class officer and a member of Student Foundation, Alpha Psi Omega and the concert choir.
Since graduating, both Abercrombies have remained connected to their university. Gary served on the Wayland Board of Trustees for many years, serving as chairman at one time, and on the WBU Alumni Association board as well. Janice is active in the Sally Society women’s philanthropy group since its founding in 2011.
As a couple, they have supported their alma mater generously over the 35 years since graduating, giving to just about every cause, campaign, Annual Fund appeal and special project. They support athletics, especially Wayland’s golf team, and have given to several endowed scholarships that bless students each semester, including a few honoring his parents and grandparents.
The dinner banquet will feature a barbecue meal from Weekends. Tickets are $15 and require advance reservations by October 19 by calling Young at (806) 291-3600.
