PLAINVIEW, TX — Wayland Baptist University is launching Pioneer BikeShare, a new bicycle-sharing program to help students without reliable transportation get around Plainview for shopping, meals, errands and other essential needs.
Through the program, students may borrow bicycles free of charge through Student Life. The university is seeking donations of new or gently used bicycles to help build the program.
“For some of our students, something as simple as making a trip across town can be difficult if they don’t have a vehicle,” said Shawn Thomas, vice president of Athletics and Student Life. “Pioneer BikeShare gives them another option and provides greater mobility and independence.”
Several area churches and businesses have already expressed interest in supporting the program, and Wayland is inviting individuals, churches and community organizations to participate.
“This is a very practical way for our community to help a student,” Thomas said. “A bicycle that may no longer be used at home could become an important source of transportation for someone at Wayland.”
