His time at the university was marked by his involvement in various capacities, from directing music at local churches to managing the Pioneers basketball team and officiating games. His commitment to Wayland continued long after his graduation, serving 19 years on the Board of Trustees and chairing it for three years.

After earning degrees at Wayland and Texas Tech, Dr. Stokes dedicated his career to public education, influencing countless lives through his roles as teacher, campus administrator, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He concluded his career as the executive director of the Region 18 Education Service Center in Midland and as interim then permanent superintendent for Ector County ISD.

The Stokes family previously established two endowed scholarships at Wayland, in the name of Dr. Stokes and his wife, Belva, and one honoring the memory of their two late daughters.
