PLAINVIEW, TX — Bonnie J. Flyum, a graduate and current adjunct professor, has been named the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award winner for Wayland Baptist University’s Alaska campus.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Financial Management with a minor in Psychology in 2008, as well as a Master of Business Administration with a specialization in Human Resources Management in 2011.
“Bonnie has more than 35 years of leadership and management experience in both the public and private sector,” said Jeffrey Vera, WBU’s alumni director. “Her career path has led her to share her leadership and management experiences as an adjunct professor at the Anchorage campus, where she instructs courses in Principles of Management, Communication and Human Resource Management.”
Her three and a half decades in leadership and management includes 20 years of service in the United States Air Force, where she served in a variety of leadership positions. Seven of those years — from 1992 to 2000 —were at Elmendorf AFB Alaska. After retirement, Flyum worked at Alaskan Command on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Alaska for several years. She served as Human Resource Director and Assistant Human Resource Director in several companies in the community for several years.
“She was one of the student leaders who helped start Wayland’s Society for Human Resource Management student chapter in 2007,” Vera said.
From 2010 to 2015, Flyum served on the board of the Anchorage Society for Human Resource Management, where she held various director positions. Since 2020 she has served on the Alaska State SHRM Council as the Foundation Director and now as the Emerging Professional Director.
She is married to Michael Flyum.
