Christmas choral concert features elementary and high school choirs

PLAINVIEW — In a display of festive holiday cheer, three local choral groups will join with Wayland Baptist University choirs Thursday, Nov. 30, for the School of Creative Arts’ annual Christmas concert at Harral Memorial Auditorium.

The concert begins at 7 p.m., but cookies and hot chocolate will be served at 6:30 p.m. Santa Claus is expected to make a guest appearance during the concert.

In addition to performances by Wayland choirs, the Central Elementary Honor Choir, as well as Plainview High School’s A Cappella and JV Tremble Advanced choirs will be performing. Dr. Sarah Herrington, Assistant Professor of Music Education, is Wayland’s Director of Choral Studies. Allison Sell, a Wayland alumnus with a Music Education degree, directs the Central Elementary choir. The PHS choirs are under the direction of Nichole Wells.

“The program includes arrangements of traditional Christmas carols,” Herrington said. “The Central Elementary Honor Choir will add two original compositions, In December and Minka, which is a Russian folk song.”

Selections by the Wayland choirs include: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Sing We Now of Christmas, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Deck the Halls, Do You Hear What I Hear? In the Bleak of Winter, and Joy to the World.

“This is the perfect opportunity to get into the spirit of Christmas with music, fellowship, and an opportunity to get an early glimpse St. Nick,” Herrington said. “We welcome the community to Wayland as we celebrate Christmas.”
