Lopez honored with Distinguished Alumni Award

ARLINGTON, TX — Bryan Lopez has been honored with Wayland Baptist University’s 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award for the Albuquerque campus.

The award was presented Oct. 2 by Development Officer Teresa Young during a Wayland alumni event in Arlington. Lopez will now compete with other 2023 campus winners for the Alumnus of the Year Award, which is scheduled to be presented during Homecoming festivities in February 2024.

“Bryan is not only a man of great faith who embraces Wayland’s values and mission, but he also has used his WBU degree to succeed greatly in a competitive field for a world-recognized corporation,” said Young.

A native of Albuquerque, N.M., the 2018 graduate now resides in Lucas in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Lopez planned to pursue a Christian Ministry degree at Wayland, but he switched to Cybersecurity to follow his natural talent for technology, as well as provide more opportunities for his growing family. The family includes four biological children with his wife, Sherry; a set of adopted triplets; a pair of adopted twins; and another adopted son.

As he was working on his degree, Lopez began working as a system engineer for Sandia National Laboratories. During two stints, he spent 13 years there, working his way up to principal cyber assurance architect. He also co-owned and served as technology director for Nuvotech for 10 years.

In January 2020, Lopez joined Microsoft as senior technology strategist for federal science and research, supporting the U.S. Department of Energy. He’s moved up in that area through the past few years and currently serves as Strategic Account Director at Microsoft for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Lopez earned his master’s degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona in 2020. He has served as a bi-vocational youth minister in the past and is active in church life, as well as foster/adoption advocacy and support.

“Bryan is a great example of our Wayland graduates making an impact in the world and in the marketplace, and we are so proud he is part of our family,” Young said.

Wayland has selected a Distinguished Alumni Award winner for each of its campuses since 2018.
