Closing reception for ‘Fandom Fusion’ set for Friday, Nov. 3

PLAINVIEW — The announcement of a closing reception on Friday, Nov. 3, for “Fandom Fusion: A Pop Culture Celebration” heralds an encore week for the exhibit, which will now run through Saturday Nov. 4 at Mabee Regional Heritage Center on Wayland Baptist University’s Plainview campus.

The reception is scheduled for 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday. Light refreshments will be served, plus the “Feel and Guess” game from Way-Con 2023 will be set up for those who want to give it a try one last time.

“If you haven't seen our exhibit, this is the last week it will be on display, so bring your family and friends to see it,” said KayLyn Bean, Director of Museums. “Fandom Fusion: A Pop Culture Celebration” is a pop-culture-themed exhibit curated from the collections of people both from the university and the Plainview community.”

Campus and community came together to make the temporary exhibit happen.

“Special thanks to many for lending us your amazing collections and,” Bean said. “We have been excited to show off favorite fandoms and interests, as well as deepen the understanding of our visitors regarding how pop-culture affects the world.”

The exhibit was originally created in conjunction with Way-Con 23, Wayland’s annual comic convention and gaming fair, which took place in September. While the exhibit closes Friday, there is still time to see the collections of Squishmallows, Funko Pops, action figures, Wonder Woman collectibles and more. There is no better time to explore the exhibit this week than during the closing reception.

For those who cannot make it to the reception, Mabee Regional Heritage Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, as well as seasonal Saturdays. Temporary exhibits are in addition to the three museums housed inside the Mabee Regional Heritage Center. The Mabee includes The Flying Queens Museum, Jimmy Dean Museum, and Museum of the Llano Estacado. A variety of temporary exhibits are featured throughout the year.
