PLAINVIEW – If you’re looking for a kid friendly, “nerd-tastic” experience this Saturday, Wayland Baptist University is the place to be as Way-Con 23 takes place at Laney Student Activities Center on the Plainview campus.
“Come experience our third annual Way-Con, a nerd’s paradise,” said Dr. Kimberlee Mendoza, Dean of the School of Languages and Literature and event organizer. “We have 40-plus vendors for the whole family, five food trucks, video games, tabletop tournaments, open play, face painting, family friendly cos-play contest and more.”
Admission is free, but food and merchandise are sold by vendors, as well as food trucks parked outside Laney Student Activities Center.
Way-Con 23 connects those who love comic books, science fiction, tabletop games, video games, cosplay, and more. Hundreds of people have come to Wayland for Way-Com the past two years, Mendoza said.
“We hope to see everyone there,” she said.
Sign-ups begin at 9:45 a.m. and Way-Con 23 opens at 10 a.m. with the main event and continued registration for tournaments. Throughout the day there will be tabletop gaming and tournaments, video game tournaments, trivia, a G-rated cosplay contest, workshops, game testing, vendor displays, raffles with $50 prizes, kid’s activities, and prizes.
Many participants are expected come costumed to the event, so Mendoza encouraged everyone to put on their best G-rated cosplay costume and join in the fun.
Scheduled tournaments include Pokémon, Mario Cart, and Magic the Gathering. Plus, there will be lots of open play. Learn to Paint workshops include Intro to Slapchop, OSL Made Easy, and Basics of Freehand. Trivia sessions include Classic Comic Trivia, Harry Potter Trivia, and Vintage Video Game Trivia. Other premium activities include a scavenger hunt, Literary Jeopardy, and the Mario Cake Walk and Raffle.

Mendoza and other Wayland faculty members will be at Way-Con to discuss the tabletop gaming degree the university offers. The humanities degree focuses on game design, storytelling and marketing, and taking a game idea from concept to the marketplace.
