Awareness Walk precedes Jimmy Dean Music and Arts Festival

PLAINVIEW — In a prelude to the Jimmy Dean Music & Arts Festival on Saturday, Sept. 16, Central Plains Center, Plainview Independent School District, and Wayland Baptist University are teaming up to encourage participation in the Walk for Suicide Awareness the same day.

While the Jimmy Dean Music & Arts Festival begins at 10 a.m. with an arts and crafts fair at Laney Student Activities Center, registration for the Walk for Suicide Awareness begins at 8 a.m. at the Wayland soccer field, which is commonly known as The Bowl. The walk begins at 9 a.m. and will include testimonies of suicide survivors as well as family members who have lost loved ones. Counseling support and resources will be available during the event.

Organizers of the Walk for Suicide Awareness are accepting orders for event T-shirts. Shirts are $12 or $14 for plus sizes. T-shirts may be ordered by calling Brandy Heads at 806-291-3764, Valerie Hernandez at 806-291-4470 or Jeffrey De La Garza at 806-293-6114.

At the conclusion of the Walk for Suicide Awareness, participants and spectators are invited to walk across Eighth Street to the Laney Student Activities Center, where the Jimmy Dean Music & Arts Festival will be in progress. The free arts and crafts fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature more than 50 vendors, food and beverage trucks, and live entertainment.

Following the arts and crafts fair, the Jimmy Dean Music & Arts Festival wraps up with a concert at 7 p.m. featuring legendary Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel. Special guests include Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys under the direction of Jason Roberts.
