PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University’s Enactus group recently showed their entrepreneurial spirit again by installing their seventh automatic water bottle filling station in three years.
Six of those seven installations have been across the Wayland campus, and one was installed in 2021at the Plainview YMCA in 2021. Automatic water bottle filling stations on the Wayland campus can be found in Gates Hall, Nunn Business Building, McClung University Center, Pete and Nelda Laney Student Activity Center, Harral Memorial Auditorium, and now Mabee Learning Resources Center.
Sally Quiroz, Director of Libraries, joined Enactus members Flor Pantoja, Shanequia Lamb, Jackson Kent, Santiago Riano, Kayla Cobbley, and Maxine Garza for the dedication of the newest automatic water bottle filling station.
Installing touchless water bottle filling stations began as an environmentally friendly response by Enactus to the shutdown of traditional water fountains during the COVID-19 pandemic. The installations were intended to address safety concerns about using traditional fountains as well as the need to reduce waste from throw-away water bottles and caps.
The Enactus team wanted to provide students with accessible water around campus while reducing the amount of plastic waste Wayland contributes to the local landfill, the group explained. During a three-year period, the automatic water bottle filling stations have been used to refill more than 50,000 reusable water bottles.
Enactus is an international organization that connects student, academic and business leaders through entrepreneurial-based projects that promote progress for their communities. The organization is open to all students with an entrepreneurial spirit.
