PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University students hope to “shine a light” on families in the Seth Ward community during a cleanup event Saturday morning, May 6, but they could use some help.
A project of the WBU chapter of the American Chemical Society and sponsored by Alpha Chi Honor Society, Seth Ward Cleanup Day begins at 8:30 a.m. at Seth Ward Baptist Church. Students and other volunteers will go out to meet people and clean up wherever needed.
“This community has been deprived of resources that enhance their everyday lives,” said Elizabeth Wirth, president of American Chemical Society. “To shine God’s light, we will be cleaning trash from Seth Ward, allowing their community to flourish.”
“We hope to reconnect with the families in Seth Ward and continue to spread the Gospel,” said Chelsea Kelley, vice president of president of American Chemical Society.
There are multiple ways to help with this cleanup endeavor.
“If you would like to get involved, you can either signup to work or donate,” Wirth said.
Students hope to raise about $700 for roll-away containers, heavy duty trash bags and water to keep workers hydrated. They also need barrowed trailers, tools for breaking down large items, medium duty gloves, walkie-talkies, and first-aid kits. Donations can be dropped off with Kendra Harts in Room 107 of the Moody Science Building, which houses the Kenneth L. Mattox School of Mathematics and Sciences.
Volunteers should meet at Seth Ward Baptist Church before 8:30 a.m. wearing protective clothing such as thick shirts and pants, closed toed and thick shoes, and protective gloves. Masks and sunscreen are recommended but will not be provided.
