Corvino ImageALBUQUERQUE – Wayland Baptist University honored a special alumnus at the May 27 graduation ceremony in Albuquerque. Amid a backdrop of degrees and commencement addresses, John Corvino was honored as Distinguished Alumni Award winner for 2022.

Corvino is Chief of Security at Central New Mexico College, where he has served for six years and supervises a team of 60 who protect the campus. He also had a distinguished 27-year career with the Albuquerque Police Department, where he was a patrolman, detective, member of the vice squad, and served 10 years on bike patrol. He was an instructor for the police academy as well. He and his partner were also featured on some episodes of the TV reality series COPS, filmed more than 20 years ago but which still occasionally air.

A native of Yonkers, N.Y., Corvino earned his bachelor’s degree at Wayland’s Albuquerque campus in 2005 while working as an officer, then returned to earn his master’s degree in instructional leadership in 2010. He has spent years encouraging others to pursue their degrees at WBU, at one time even working part-time at the campus as a recruiter and academic advisor.

“Wayland has long been supportive of the military and law enforcement officers who serve our communities, and folks like John Corvino are a good example of why we feel it’s worth it,” said Teresa Young, Director of Alumni Relations at Wayland. “His heart for people and his commitment to community service through his career make him a great choice for Distinguished Alumnus of the Albuquerque campus, and we’re so proud to honor him.”

Corvino will be competing with other campus winners from 2022 for the Alumnus of the Year award to be presented at Homecoming in February 2023. Wayland has selected a winner for each of its campuses since 2018.
