Dr. Rangel Focusing on Christian Education in South Texas

SAN ANTONIO -- Wayland Baptist University professor Dr. Joe Rangel has been named the new Associate Dean of the School of Christian Studies. Rangel has been with Wayland since 2016, serving as Associate Professor of Christian Ministry and Director of Assessment for the School of Christian Studies.

With his new assignment, Rangel will move offices to the San Antonio campus where his expertise and connections will be put to good use. With extensive experience working with both education and ministry across Texas and Southern California, his focus is on developing relationships among Baptists in San Antonio and South Texas.

Dean of the School of Christian Studies Dr. Stephen Stookey said Dr. Rangel was the prefect choice to lead Wayland's ministry programs in San Antonio and south Texas.

"Dr. Rangel's academic and ministry roots in South Texas run deep," Stookey said. "His expertise in cross-cultural ministry will allow Wayland to strengthen existing programs and develop new, innovative ministry collaborations across San Antonio and South Texas."

Dr. Rangel will also focus on promoting a new Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) Business as Mission degree that is a collaboration between the School of Christian Studies and the School of Business. The new degree focuses on giving students the education they need to make a successful business, then teaching them how to incorporate their faith and mission into what they do.

"I am excited about returning to a place that is so familiar to me as San Antonio is where I began my career in higher education," Rangel said. "I know the importance of quality theological training in that region, and I believe that Wayland Baptist University is poised now more than ever to deliver exceptional theological training to a demographic that is quickly becoming the future of Christian ministry."

Stookey said the promotion of Rangel and his move to the San Antonio campus highlight Wayland's commitment to theological education in San Antonio and South Texas. Wayland has operated in San Antonio since 1984 and offers a bachelor's degree (BCM) with majors in Christian Ministry, Theological Studies (MATS), and Co-Vocational Ministry, as well as master's degrees in Christian Ministry (MACM) and Divinity (MDiv). San Antonio students can also earn the accelerated BCM-MDiv degree and the joint MDiv/MBA degree online.
