C. Neal Johnson, Ph.D., JD
Neal Johnson has an extensive and unique 45-year background as an attorney, banker, educator, business consultant and entrepreneur, both internationally and domestically. He has had a most interesting career, during which he has served in such widely diverse positions as president of a community bank, President of the New Mexico Bankers Association, District Governor of Rotary International, founding dean of a graduate business school with classes in Hong Kong and the Philippines, co-founder of the first western style bank in the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan and one of the negotiators on the military portion of the Panama Canal Treaty.
Dr. Johnson has an impressive array of academic credentials (Ph.D., JD, MA-ICS, MPA and Graduate Banking Degree), which allow him to bring both a practical and academic perspective to his teaching, consulting and writing. He has traveled in over 70 countries, lived in 10, pastored a church in northern Italy, served on the mission field in the Dominican Republic, planted a church in Kazakhstan where he preached for three years and has been active on the Boards of Directors for missions in Armenia, Moscow, West Africa, China and Latin America.
Dr. Johnson’s passion for Christ in the marketplace is seen in his book, Business as Mission (BAM): A Comprehensive Guide to Theory and Practice (InterVarsity Academic, 2009). Now in its sixth printing, this work has been acclaimed by evangelic and business leaders alike as one of the preeminent works in this exciting field of mission. He is currently finishing work on a new book to be titled, BAM in a Nutshell: All the Basics, and hopes to publish it later this year. His primary focus is finding faith-based, innovative solutions to global poverty and bringing Christ-centered transformation to communities, all through BAM and other forms of missional entrepreneurship. To that end, he speaks and teaches around the globe on this important topic at universities, seminaries, churches and conferences.
Dr. Johnson has spent the past two decades in Christian higher education, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Until recently Dr. J, as he is known to his students, was Professor and the Chair of Graduate Business Studies at Hope International University (HIU) in Fullerton, California. He now holds the title of Distinguished Professor at HIU’s College of Business and Management, where he teaches part-time online from his mountain cabin in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
In Pagosa Springs, Dr. J continues his commitment to community and economic development and mission by serving on the Boards of Director of the county’s Community Development Committee (CDC) and the local Rotary Club, and on his church’s mission committee. From Pagosa he serves on the Boards of Directors of the International Literacy and Development non-profit (ILAD) out of Dallas that is committed to creating BAM enterprises globally and of the Latin American Christian Ministries (LACM) that has a decade old PhD program in Missiology and Theology in Spanish throughout Latin American. Through these associations, as well as his speaking, writing and networking, Dr. J continues to forge new paths of engagement for the church, the academy and the business world in and through BAM.
