About this Program

The professional writing specialization offers English majors the opportunity to develop expertise in writing and editing for various contexts, including traditional print and publishing fields and emergent fields, such as contemporary online/web-based content and design and technical communication.

Courses in this specialization develop critical thinking, cultural and audience awareness, and the ability to work creatively in a variety of environments related to public relations, teaching, the legal field, writing, and research.

The professional writing degree offers seminars in Advanced Grammar, Creative Writing, Technical Communication, Usage and Style, and various courses in communication and graphic design.

These technical writing courses are a specialization of the Bachelor of Arts in English, which requires 37 hours in a student’s major field of study and a maintained major GPA of at least a 3.0.

This degree plan further requires that 18 hours of an English major’s study are in some variation of professional writing courses.

Requirements

A Bachelor of Arts degree in English: Professional Writing requires 124 course hours. A total of 42 hours must be from upper-level courses.
