Bio

Laura C. Brandenburg, PhD., is an Associate Professor of English at Wayland Baptist University. She teaches both face-to face-classes on the Plainview campus and online courses through the WBUonline. Before taking the full-time position at Wayland, she held an instructor position at Texas Tech University for five years, teaching foundational courses from Essentials of College Rhetoric and Advanced College Rhetoric to Introduction to Technical Communication. At Wayland, Dr. Brandenburg teaches a range of non-literature, writing-intensive courses within the Professional Writing Specialization for English majors, including Technical Communication, Usage and Style, Introduction to Linguistics, Advanced Grammar, and Research Writing.

Dr. Brandenburg’s undergraduate degree is in English and Journalism from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Her master's degree is in English with a specialization in linguistics from Texas Tech University, and her PhD in Technical Communication and Rhetoric is also from Texas Tech.   Her dissertation research uses think-aloud protocol and reader-response theory as a framework for understanding how writers and readers co-construct the writer’s ethos—the essence of the writer’s character as well as her credibility or expertise. Dr. Brandenburg’s research primarily focuses on the structures of language for grammar and style, and the social relationship between language usage and our identity.

Dr. Brandenburg frequently attends WBU athletic, music and theater events with her husband, Howell. She and Howell also serve on their church’s volunteer teams, including coffee service and prayer team, and host a life group on Wednesday evenings. In her personal time, Dr. Brandenburg also enjoys reading, writing, and playing golf.
