Server Administrator (Information Technology)

Responsibilities: The Server Administrator is generally responsible for computer wide and local area network server operations that allow data communications between all campuses and offices of the university, and for assisting the Network Administrator.

Specific Tasks and Duties:
1.  Set up, configure, manage, and apply service packs and updates on a timely basis, as required, to all computer network servers in the Network Operations Center (NOC) at the Plainview campus and external campuses

2.  Set up, configure, manage, repair and proactively manage and monitor all servers in the Network Operations Center at the Plainview campus, including virtual and non-virtual servers

3.  Setup, configure and manage packaged software deployments to computers across all campus locations

4.  Assist the Network Administrator with managing, configuring, and maintaining all routers and firewalls for all domains at the Plainview campus.  Assist the External Campuses as necessary with the management, configuration and maintenance of all routers and firewalls, along with any and all VPNs connecting the campuses

5.  Assist the Network Administrator with configuring and maintaining backup software and backup devices to ensure the security and integrity of the university’s data.  Ensure that the backups are stored off-site in a secure location.  Periodically, test the integrity of the backups via restores to a test server.  Work with the Director of I.T. and the rest of the I.T. team to the recover data in the event of emergencies, disasters or deleted files

6.  Manage, configure and maintain all spam, email and web filters on the network

7.  Respond to emergencies in the NOC as they occur.  This includes nights, weekends, holidays or other times when network services may be interrupted and when immediate physical attention to restore services is required.  Constant up time of the network for all campuses is a high priority.  In all cases, the Director of Information Technology must be informed when an emergency has occurred and what steps are being taken to resolve the issue

8.  Maintain and manage wide area network, wireless network and student network, including network servers, routers, switches, and other peripheral devices.  Track significant problems, monitor performance and perform upgrades to hardware and software as required.  Configure network devices for proper routing and security

9.  Design and recommend new server, router, firewall, or other network strategies to the Director of I.T.  Implement approved designs.  Assist the Director of Information Technology in establishing the hardware and software configuration for these systems and in coordinating the orders for new systems from approved university vendors, and within university budgetary guidelines

10.  Coordinate the efficient and safe operation of the NOC with the Associate Director for Communications Services, including, but not limited to voltage regulation, generator backup, UPS backup, temperature control, and the ongoing maintenance and repair of servers and other equipment

11.  Participate with other I.T. staff in long and short range technology planning and implementing of network services for WBU users within budgetary guidelines

12.  Train I.T. staff to follow proper operating procedures necessary to maintain the integrity of the network.  Communicate with I.T. members prior to implementation of network changes, maintenance or upgrades

13.  Coordinate with the Help Desk Manager on the management of network user accounts to ensure that WBU network users are able to work

14.  Assist the Network Support I.T. team member in establishing workstation configurations for efficient and secure operation on the university network

15.  Manage server software installations while making sure that the university is in compliance with all server software licensing agreements

16.  Assist the Associate Director for Communications Services in designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting network circuits at the Plainview campus

17.  Establish and maintain a diagram showing the physical location of all computer servers and other network hardware in the NOC.  Maintain documentation regarding network configurations, operating procedures, and service records relating to network hardware and software

18.  Establish and maintain a secure file of all administrative passwords, all network configuration information, and other information that would be required to re-establish services in the event of a disaster.  This secure file is to be supplied to the Director of Information Technology and must be kept in I.T. department safes and bank safety deposit boxes

19.  Design, implement, and maintain the security strategy and required hardware and software to ensure that the network servers and university data are secure.  Perform periodic intrusion testing and security testing to insure network integrity and PCI compliance

20.  Work with the Director of Information Technology and other I.T. team members to plan and implement a disaster recovery plan for the university, including external campuses

21.  Provide telephone support services, remote desktop assistance, on-site support, or whatever action is needed to help resolve user network issues that occur at any WBU campus.  Coordinate technical support with third party computer support vendors at External Campuses

22.  Respond to assignments for technical assistance from the Help Desk, other I.T. team members, or the TrackIT database in a timely manner

23.  Attend I.T. department meetings

24.  Carry a cell phone as supplied by the I.T. department, and be available for calls except at times agreed upon with the Director of Information Technology

25.  Travel to external campuses to provide network related services when assigned

26.  Attend classes, seminars, conferences and review professional literature to enhance knowledge of trends and developments related to wide and local area network systems

27.  Cooperate with other I.T. team members on requests for assistance

28.  Complete administrative tasks correctly and on time

29.  Adhere to all university policies and procedures

Qualifications: A commitment of Christian Higher education and in agreement with the purposes and philosophy of Christian higher education as promoted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas in general and Wayland Baptist University in particular.

Education, Certification and License: Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or industry certification in related field(s).

Experience & Knowledge:
1.  Five (5) years minimum total networking experience

2.  Strong knowledge of wide and local area network architecture, infrastructure requirements, network operating systems, and components of same

3.  Three (3) years of recent wide area networking and active directory management experience required

4.  Considerable knowledge of wide and local area network protocols and diagnostic tools

5.  Working knowledge of and experience with Microsoft server software, including but not limited to:  Windows Standard and Advanced server software, Microsoft Exchange Enterprise, Microsoft ISA, Microsoft SQL and Terminal Services

6.   Strong knowledge of and experience with Cisco routers, network routing, firewalls and network switching systems

7.  Strong knowledge of and experience with wireless network routers, end point configuration, security and wireless network configuration

8.  Strong knowledge of network security planning, procedures, implementation and maintenance

9.  Strong knowledge of network backup software and hardware

10.  Strong knowledge of email and web filtering software

11.  Strong knowledge of network patch management

12.  Working knowledge of network disaster recovery

13.  Working knowledge of and experience with Linux server software

14.  Strong knowledge of and experience with network computer hardware maintenance

15.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications

7.  Ability to work with I.T. team members to coordinate and plan network activities, maintenance and changes to network components in order to ensure the most uptime for all network users and avoid unnecessary help desk calls.  Communication with I.T. team members is imperative before any type of network change, maintenance or upgrade is done

Additional Requirements:
1.  The Network Administrator must live close enough to the Plainview campus to physically respond to network emergencies within thirty to forty-five minutes of being notified that an emergency situation requiring his or her presence has occurred

2.  Must have no delinquent or defaulted Student Loans.  A credit check may be conducted to insure the requirement is met
