Head Coach of Softball

LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University (WBU) – Plainview Campus 

DIVISION/DEPARTMENT:  Intercollegiate Athletics 

SUPERVISED BY: Athletics Director 

POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Exempt (Executive) 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head Coach of Softball position requires all functions normally associated with an intercollegiate athletic program and will be bound by the university and the athletic department mission statements.

 SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES: 

  1. Coaching and management of all practice sessions, games, and program associated events.
  2. Have a sound knowledge and adherence of NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference eligibility and  compliance rules and regulations.
  3. Understand and support the mission, policies, and regulations of Wayland Baptist University.
  4. Understand and embrace the unique challenge or starting and athletic program.
  5. Schedule competitions and related events.
  6. Understand and excel in the coaching techniques and strategies for collegiate softball.
  7. Monitor team’s academic performance and create internal support for academic success.
  8. Budget management, organization, and oversight.
  9. Recruit a quality of student athlete that can compete at the highest level both academically and athletically.
  10. Recruit a quantity of student athletes that will support the enrollment goals of the University and the program.
  11. Support the mission and structure of the department that will include the management of a nationally competitive roster.
  12. Complete and respond in a timely manner to all requests from Athletic and University administration regarding policy, procedures, and management of the Baseball program.
  13. Learn about and embrace the amazing history of the Wayland Baptist University Athletic Department.
  14. Purchase and maintain equipment and supplies.
  15. Participate in department event preparations as needed.
  16. Cultivate positive campus and community relations.
  17. Effectively participate in the marketing and financial development of the program.
  18. Hire, supervise and lead a quality coaching staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Master’s Degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

Applicants must currently be active in the field with college level playing and coaching experience preferred. 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. A commitment to a Christian lifestyle and coaching from a Christian perspective is essential.
  2. Applicants should have proven integrity, leadership skills, and the ability to motivate students to be successful academically and athletically.
  3. Applicants should possess good interpersonal skills, be able to communicate effectively with all members of the campus community and demonstrate the ability to work with a diverse population.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance.  If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish their identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  Employee must be able and willing to travel and work on weekends and evenings. Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver’s license.  Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
