Director of the Mabee Regional Heritage Center

LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University (WBU) – Plainview Campus

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of the Mabee Regional Heritage Center manages all aspects of museum operations and administration for the Museum of the Llano Estacado, the Jimmy Dean Museum, and the Flying Queens Museum, including but not limited to exhibits, research, collections care, education, public programming events, grant writing, budgeting, and building improvements/maintenance.

SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES: 

  1. Recruit, manage and train Mabee Regional Heritage Center volunteers, student employees, and interns.
  1. Prepare and maintain annual Center/Museum budget, ensuring the efficient use of resources,    generation of revenue, and accurate tracking of all revenue received through proper university  accounts and channels
  2. Follow an effective collections policy to ensure all Center/Museum collections are properly stored, preserved and exhibited
  3. Maintain a collections inventory and collections organizational plan
  4. Oversee Museum exhibition plans and research, creating exhibits as needed
  5. Plan and implement an annual calendar of programs, events, and community outreach activities
  6. Collaborate with faculty to supervise undergraduate Museum practicums and internships
  7. Serve as the chief advocate and spokesperson for the Center, and establish strong partnerships with the local, state and regional community to enhance each Museum’s image
  8. Seek and administer grants and oversee membership programs
  9. Engage university administration in activities in order to maximize potential philanthropy to the Center/Museums as well as the university, attending appropriate events to cultivate donors
  10. Demonstrate a commitment to Christian Higher education and in agreement with the purposes  and philosophy of Christian higher education as promoted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas in general and Wayland Baptist University in particular
  11. Complete related duties as assigned by the Vice President of Academic Affairs

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A commitment to Christian Higher education and in agreement with the purposes and philosophy of Christian higher education as promoted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas in general and Wayland Baptist University in particular.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree required; Master's degree or higher in Museum Studies, Art, Art History, American Studies, or related field strongly preferred.

Experience and Knowledge:

Two (2) years of experience in museum studies or curator work preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Demonstrate computer literacy; in particular, knowledge of museum/collections software
  2. Outstanding organizational abilities
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance. If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish their identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  Employee must be able and willing to travel.  Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, possess a valid state driver’s license.  Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
