Assistant Baseball Coach

LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University (WBU) – Plainview Campus

SUPERVISED BY: Head Baseball Coach and Athletic Director 


POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Graduate Assistants and Student Workers                                                          

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Baseball Coach is responsible for assisting with the Varsity Baseball program and may include oversight for the direction and management of all aspects of the Junior Varsity Baseball program.


  1. Assist in the recruiting of student-athletes who have the ability and potential, athletically and academically, to achieve success at WBU. In that sense, the assistant baseball coach serves as a recruiting officer of the University, attracting students to participate in the baseball program. Assist with the planning, organization and supervision of the Junior Varsity Baseball program:
    • Assist with the establishment of the game schedule for the Junior Varsity Baseball program
    • Assist in procuring and purchasing items for the baseball program
    • Public relations
    • Marketing
    • Fundraising
  2. Assist in the planning, organization and supervision of the Varsity Baseball program.
  3. Sets forth desired goals for the baseball program.
  4. Adhere to all policies and procedures of the NAIA, the Sooner Athletic Conference and WBU.
  5. Arrange for the use of facilities and vehicles through the Athletics Director.
  6. Arrange for pre-participation physicals and be responsible for securing all pre-participation forms as required by the Athletics Department policy for eligibility purposes.
  7. Assist with the recommendation of a preliminary budget for the upcoming season to the Director of Athletics. Also, ensure that budgeted revenues are achieved, and budgeted expenses are not exceeded.
  8. Keep records of uniforms, equipment, and supplies issued during the season and submit an inventory of same at the end of the school year to the Head Baseball Coach and Athletics Director.
  9. May serve the Varsity Head Baseball Coach as the Coordinator of Baseball Operations:
    • Assist in recruiting for the varsity and junior varsity baseball programs by making contacts with potential players and arranging for campus visits.
    • Assist with the coordination of transportation and travel needs of the varsity and junior varsity baseball programs.
    • Assist the Head Baseball Coach in the planning, organization, and supervision of the total year round program for the sport of baseball. This will include pre and post-season practices as well as games.
    • In the absence of the Head Baseball Coach, the Assistant Baseball Coach may be responsible for the team or a portion of the team in practice and in games.
  10. Be instrumental in leading team members to attain Christian growth and high ethical and moral standards.
  11. Assist in all facilities maintenance, which includes equipment and facility upkeep and student workers.

  1. Bachelors Degree in ­Physical Education or closely related field is required.
  2. Masters Degree in PHEO or closely related field is preferred.

Experience and Knowledge:

  1. Experience in Baseball is required.
  2. Collegiate coaching experience in Baseball is preferred. 

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Possess good PC skills with experience in word processing, spreadsheet and database experience.
  2. Be able to communicate with the team in practice and competition.
  3. Possess written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate with a variety of constituents.


Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance.   If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish their identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  Employee must be able and willing to travel.  Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle and possess a valid state driver’s license or have access to reliable transportation.  Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
