Assistant Professor of Sociology

LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University (WBU) – Plainview Campus 

DEPARTMENT: School of Behavioral & Social Sciences 

SUPERVISED BY: Dean of the School of Behavioral & Social Sciences 

POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Exempt (Teaching) 

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None                                                                                             

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: As a full-time faculty member, Assistant/Associate Professor of Sociology will be primarily responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in sociology, both face to face and online. Some graduate courses in related fields may also be required.

SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES: 

  1. Prepare and teach 24 semester hours of courses each academic year.
  2. Maintain a minimum of 10 office hours/week.
  3. Academically advise undergraduate students and assist with registrations and recruiting events.
  4. Assist the Dean in developing the sociology program, reporting data, selecting textbooks, and developing syllabi.
  5. Serve on University, Faculty, and School Committees and attend graduations, school events, and attend scheduled faculty and staff meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A commitment to and an agreement with the purposes and philosophy of Christian higher education as promoted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas in general and Wayland Baptist University in particular.

Education:

Ph.D. from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in sociology, social work or closely related fields is preferred. ABD candidates will also be considered. License social work is a plus.

Experience and Knowledge:

  1. Recent experience teaching in a college or university setting is preferred.
  2. Experience teaching online courses.
  3. Field or agency experience in sociology or social work is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Qualifications to teach sociology and social work classes at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Additionally, preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following qualifications:
  2. Practical experience in the field
  3. Recent successful experience using technology in the teaching/learning process, interdisciplinary teaching, and/or on-line delivery of education.
  4. The ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities
  5. Proficiency with computers, technology, and related educational/classroom equipment; 
  6. A strong interest in teaching and leading in the growth and development of undergraduate students
  7. The ability and desire to apply Christian principles in the workplace

Additional Requirements:

  1. Endorsement by the Executive Vice President/Provost.
  2. Must be able to pass Background Check. 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance.   If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish his/her identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver’s license.  Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
