Development Officer

LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University – San Antonio

SUPERVISED BY: Vice President of Institutional Advancement

POSITION CLASSIFICATION:  Exempt

POSITIONS SUPERVISED:   None

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:  Builds relationships to support the strategic fundraising initiatives of the university. Emphasis is on foundation grants and major gifts. Occasionally assists with special events.

SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES: 

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward new donors for the university through use of personal contact including calls, letters, electronic communication and university publications.
  • Create effective foundation proposals to secure grants from foundations.
  • Call, write and electronically communicate with mid-level donors. Help identify major giving prospects and make regular visits to cultivate giving.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with members of the Wayland faculty and staff to effectively create new and repeat donors.
  • Effectively align University priorities and prospect interests.
  • Align activities with the University’s strategic plan for Advancement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Bachelor’s degree

Experience and Knowledge: Three (3) years demonstrated success in Advancement or related field preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with university leadership, faculty, prospects, donors, and volunteers.
  • Familiarity with the university environment and experience working with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer and in using a variety of software applications particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with Raiser’s Edge a plus.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and use good judgment in developing solutions within the unique environment of a Christian University.
  • Self-starter, self-motivated and possess the ability to conceptualize processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement initiatives based on the strategic planning process.

Work Environment: The work environment for this position is a standard office setting. Employees will work primarily at a desk or workstation, utilizing standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers.  The office maintains a controlled temperature.  Noise levels are generally moderate, with typical office sounds such as conversations and office machinery. 

Hours of Work: Plainview campus - The official work week for full-time salaried employees is forty (40) hours. Normal work days on all campuses are Monday through Friday.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently stand and walk;
  • Frequently flex upper trunk forward while sitting or standing;
  • Frequently lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds;
  • Frequently carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally carry up to 25 pounds;
  • Occasionally push or pull objects;
  • Occasionally flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially flex at the knees;
  • Frequently reach at or below shoulder height, and occasionally reach above shoulder height

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance.   If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  Employee must be able and willing to travel and provide recruitment assistance to external campuses.  Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver’s license.  Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
