HEALTH SERVICES

Urgent Update:

Effective January 2010, Texas legislation mandates that every new student or new transfer student to any Texas university who is planning to live in campus housing will be required to have a Meningitis vaccination at least 10 days prior to taking up residence on campus. New students coming to live in Wayland housing must have been vaccinated by 10 day prior to moving on campus. Students must produce official documentation of the vaccination. Documentation must be dated and signed or stamped by a physician or public health clinic. The documentation should be mailed to the following address:
Housing Office
Wayland Baptist University
1900 West 7th Street, CMB 619
Plainview, TX  79072

Student Health Services exists to promote the health and wellness of every student by direct intervention and health education. The student's physical well-being is of utmost importance to Wayland's administration, faculty, and staff. Students are always welcome to visit the Health Services office for any health-related matter. Health Services are provided free for any student currently enrolled at the university.

Eligibility for Service

To help in assuring a healthy environment, all new students entering the University must
submit a completed University Medical History Form. This form gives the nurse important information about the student and gives her permission to treat the student. If the student is under age 18 the form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. A completed Medical History Form must be received by the University nurse within 30 days of initial registration.

A registered nurse provides free medical and first aid care for any student enrolled during the fall and/or spring semesters. The nurse is also available on a limited basis for those registered during the summer sessions. A local physician serves as a consultant to the nurse and writes standing orders and protocols. The Health Services office will facilitate appointments with physicians and other medical entities as the need arises. (The student is responsible for all off-campus health services.)

Although Wayland does not officially recognize excused absences, students who miss class because of illness should contact their professors before the class meets. If the professor requires proof of illness, the student must be seen by a medical professional while ill. Students may receive medical excuses based upon the evaluation of the registered nurse in Health Services.

An organized program for wellness, directed by the Coordinator of Health Services, encourages each student to develop a healthy lifestyle and a consistent personal fitness program. Health-related issues are addressed in regular residence hall meetings. Also, Counseling and Health Services cooperate to provide educational programming which target the non-traditional as well as the residence hall student.
