School of Education

Wayland Baptist University is a private, church-related, coeducational university which seeks to serve both traditional and non-traditional undergraduate and graduate students. The university seeks to attract students from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, intellectual, ethnic, religious, and geographical backgrounds. The faculty is dedicated to its mission and purpose, the profession of teaching, Christian values, scholarship, the academic and general welfare of students and service to the community.

The university offers courses of study which can simultaneously fulfill the degree requirements as well as the requirements established by the State of Texas. Wayland offers programs leading to the Provisional Certificate in Early Childhood (PreK-6), Elementary Certificate (1-8), Secondary Certificate (6-12), All-Level Certificate in Music (1-12) and the All-Level Certificate in Physical Education (K-12).

The education program at Wayland is field-based. Early in the program, students are in the schools observing, teaching, and experiencing the education process with hands-on applications.

  • August Experience (occurs during the opening of school)
  • Student Teaching

The School of Education, directed by Dean, Dr. James Luce Todd, offers programs in elementary education, middle school education, secondary education, career and technology education, and occupational education.

The BSIS, Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, is for student seeking early childhood/elementary teacher certification. Rather than the traditional academic major/minor, this degree features a 35-38 semester hour program as well as professional development sequence. Middle school certification is provided for grades 4-8. Specializations are available in science, language arts, social studies, and mathematics.

The BA, Bachelor of Arts is for students seeking certification to teach high school business administration, english, history, speech, or foreign language.

The BM, Bachelor of Music, is for students seeking certifications as an all-level music teacher.

All-level certification is also available in art, music, physical education, special education, technical applications and theatre for students seeking to teach at both elementary and secondary levels. This option requires a minimum of 36 hours in an academic subject which will be the major.

The School of Education also offers a Masters of Education .

The School of Education offer programs in exercise and sport science, all level physical education teaching certificate, and pre-license in athletic training. A minor is also available in coaching.

Faculty and Staff

Each education major is assigned an academic advisor (faculty member) and should consult regularly with the advisor to ensure proper course selection Each faculty member has regular hours to assist students with advising or give students assistance with class work.
