Starnes earns NBIA certification

PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University Associate Dean of the School of Business Dr. Charles Starnes was recently certified for completing the National Business Incubation Association Incubator Management Program.

Dr. Charles StarnesStarnes serves as the director of Wayland’s newly formed Spark Business Accelerator. Spark is a business incubator that helps entrepreneurs form working business models to help turn their ideas into viable businesses.

Wayland Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Bobby Hall said that Starnes’ involvement in the certification program will have a strong influence on the success of Spark.

“We appreciate the forward movement demonstrated by this accomplishment and the many other advances already being seen at Spark, which I truly believe will have a remarkable impact on Wayland students and faculty, the Plainview community and West Texas region,” Hall said. “We are thankful for Dr. Starnes’ outstanding leadership in this regard.”

The NBIA program is a four-day workshop involving 24 hours of extensive training in various management issues faced by incubator programs, such as client funding, strategic planning, facilities management, serving clients and encouraging local and global entrepreneurial activity. The program is designed to give participants a better understanding of how to build stronger client and stakeholder relationships, work within start-up company life cycles and how to establish effective programs.

Starnes said the program was developed by experienced industry professionals to give a comprehensive and practical overview of the responsibilities of incubator management. He said participants receive valuable career-building experience.

Spark Client“The program provides a real-world view into the best practices of incubator management,” Starnes said. “Participants develop skills and gather tools to enhance the success of their programs.”

Spark Business Accelerator is open to the public and provides some office and conference space along with computer and internet access and business counseling services.
