The Hub hosting meeting for volunteers

PLAINVIEW – Anyone interested in volunteering to make Plainview a better place is encouraged to attend a meeting of The Hub on Monday, March 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church at 1001 W. 7th street in Plainview.

The Hub is an organization designed to bring community non-profit groups together, encouraging communication and coordination efforts between the groups. The purpose of the March 3 meeting is to begin putting together a database of volunteers to assist these groups in their efforts.

Jessica Beeman, missions coordinator at FUMC and organizer of The Hub, said the organization’s goal is three-fold -- to foster communication and cooperation between groups, connect volunteers with organizations needing help, and become an organization that minsters to the community by helping individuals become self-sufficient.

“Every organization needs volunteers,” said Beeman whose “lofty” goal for The Hub is community development by teaching individuals the techniques necessary to meet their own needs and instilling in them a sense of pride and accomplishment through their efforts.

“We are trying to do everything through a holistic standpoint – the teach-a-man-to-fish standpoint,” Beeman said, referring to the adage that if you give a man a fish he will eat for a day, but if you teach a man to fish he will eat for a lifetime.

A 2006 graduate of Wayland Baptist University, Beeman began working toward the goal as a student who recognized the need for coordination and development among Plainview’s organizations. Her conviction was strengthened after spending a year in Kenya, working with those in need. Through her job at FUMC, Beeman has been able to bring organizations together through The Hub, and coordinate efforts and information.

“We didn’t want to reinvent the wheel,” she explained. “We just wanted to become The Hub of the wheel.”

The March 3 meeting is open to anyone interested in volunteering. Beeman said the meeting is a place where potential volunteers can talk with leaders from multiple organizations to determine where they would like to help.
