PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University recognized its award winning students Wednesday morning during its weekly chapel service in Harral Auditorium.
The top award given to students each year is the Citizenship Award recognizing one female and one male student who have exemplified strong character and the Body of Christ both in and out of the classroom.
The 2012 Citizenship Woman of the Year is Laura Higgs.
A native of Keller and the daughter of Joe Higgs and Regina Schvartz, Laura was born on September 20, 1989.
She enrolled at Wayland in 2008. While in school Laura has been involved in the Student Government Association, Student Senate, Student Alumni Council and Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society. She has vice president and president of Senate, president of the Student Alumni Council and vice president and president of KDP. She also served as president of the student body her senior year.
Laura will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree in elementary education.
The 2012 Citizenship Man of the Year is Lance Heinen.
A native of Plainview and the son of Leon and Patricia Heinen, Lance was born on August 14, 1989.
He enrolled at Wayland in 2006. While in school Lance has been involved in the Student Government Association, Student Foundation, Student Senate and Student Alumni Council. He has served as president of the Student Union Board and as the student representative for the technology committee. Lance has also served as one of Wayland’s President’s Ambassador.
Lance will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Recreation and Camp Management.
Wayland also recognized Christion Draper and Nicole Adams as Freshman Man and Woman of the year.
Other awards and recognition were given to outstanding students in academic disciplines as well as Spinning Wheels, Who’s Who and Pioneer Scholars. Award winners were:
