browning family dedicates endowed scholarship to their parents

PLAINVIEW – The children of Tommy and Billie Claire Browning gathered Saturday at the Wayland Baptist University homecoming alumni luncheon to dedicate an endowed scholarship in their name and memory.

Browning Family Scholarship Sons Hollis Browning and Bill Browning and daughter Elizabeth Devereaux were on hand with their families to formally dedicate the scholarship that will be used to help deserving students attend Wayland.

              Thomas N. “Tommy” Browning was born Dec. 18, 1929, in Clovis, N.M., and Billie Claire Mason was born Oct. 17, 1929, in Wichita Falls. Both graduated from Snyder High School in 1947. Billie Claire graduated from Baylor University in 1951 and Tommy graduated from Howard Payne University in 1952. They married Aug. 30, 1951, in Crystal City.

              Tommy was a farmer and owner of two Coca-Cola plants, and Billie Claire was a life member of Texas PTA, a member of Chapter B.L. of PEO Sisterhood, Gamma Delphin Study Club, and the Ladies Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church and a past member of Junior Service League. Mr. Browning died Aug. 27, 2008, and Mrs. Browning died April 5, 2009.

              Their children are Hollis and Susan Browning of Plainview; Bill and Jodi Browning of Waco; and Elizabeth and Richard T. Devereaux of San Antonio. The Brownings also had nine grandchildren. Tommy is the brother of Jeane Browning of Plainview, who with wife Barbara also has a scholarship at Wayland in their name.

              The Browning family members are strong believer in education and great supporters of Wayland.
