Wayland was established in Plainview in 1908 by pioneer doctor James H. Wayland. Dr. Wayland gave $10,000 and 25 acres of land to establish an institution of higher learning based on Christian principles to serve the high plains of Texas. His gift eventually grew to more than $100,000, an enormous sum of money at that time.

Wayland’s relationship with the military began in 1974 when the Air Force invited the school to offer classes and degree programs at Sheppard Air Base in Wichita Falls. Wayland now serves military bases throughout the United States. A large percentage of military personnel who receive their degrees while serving in the armed forces are graduates of Wayland.
