Wayland history book now available, book signing set

Release Date: February 17, 2009

PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University has just released its history book The Wayland Century: 100 Years of Presidents, Policies and Pictures.

History BookA book signing will be held in conjunction with Wayland’s homecoming at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, in the employee lounge in Wayland’s McClung University Center. Written by Jonathan Petty, BA ’95, researched by Dr. Estelle Owens, BA ’71, and edited by Teresa Young, BA ’94, the 168-page book contains a personal touch from those who have lived through and experienced much of the history. It is presented in a format that is intended to be easy to read while providing the reader with in-depth knowledge of the school’s history.

This coffee-table version of Wayland’s history includes a narrative of the first 100 years, beginning with Dr. James H. Wayland’s move to the West Texas Plains and ending with the Centennial Celebration. Along with the narrative, the book contains memories and anecdotes from former and current students, as well as a timeline of Wayland and national events, and more than 400 pictures gathered throughout the century.

The book is being sold for $40 with all proceeds benefitting student scholarships. Books are available at the University Store in the McClung Center and will also be made available at various locations throughout homecoming weekend, Feb. 20-21. You may also order a book by contacting Wayland’s Office of Communications at 806-291-3586.

Dr. Owens is also working on a comprehensive version of the Wayland history that will be made available to the public at a later date.
