Melcher joins WBU development staff

PLAINVIEW – Mike Melcher has joined the staff at Wayland Baptist University as the first Director of Corporate Giving, beginning July 10.

As part of the Institutional Advancement department, Melcher will be responsible for developing relationships with businesses around the region for possible sponsorships and partnerships with the university.

A native of Slaton, Melcher has a bachelor’s degree in finance from Texas Tech University. He worked in banking for two years, then owned and operated car dealerships in West Texas for 31 years. Melcher is a partner in a bakery business in Amarillo, The Cake Lady and Company.

Melcher has been familiar with Wayland over the years as extended family and good friends have attended. He has an appreciation for Christian higher education, which was a major reason for his interest in the job.

“I believe in Christian education and want to support it,” Melcher said, adding that his new position fulfills a great goal. “I wanted to do something with the rest of my working years that I felt I could make a difference, especially in the lives of young people.

“I wanted to further the school and help make some things possible that might not have been,” he added.

Betty Donaldson, vice president for institutional advancement, said the addition of the position and the hiring of Melcher represents the university’s desire to bolster fundraising and development efforts, particularly as the school moves into a centennial celebration.

“We have wanted to grow our development office for several years, and the addition of a corporate giving director allows us to expand our breadth across the region,” Donaldson said. “Mike Melcher brings a great background in business and lots of creativity and enthusiasm to this new position and we know he will be an asset to the Wayland family.”

Melcher is married to the former Debra Graham, a native of Olton. He has three grown children, Wesley of Dallas, Russell of Amarillo and Kaci Bohn of Amarillo. Currently living in Amarillo, the Melchers are members of Grace Baptist Church in Canyon.
