Dr. Keith Bruce, director of institutional ministries for the Baptist General Convention of Texas in Dallas, will be the commencement speaker for the Dec. 10 ceremony scheduled at Wayland Baptist University.
Approximately 60 students will receive degrees in the ceremony, which is slated for 2 p.m. in Harral Memorial Auditorium. Graduating senior Britany Lewis, a speech major from Borger, will be giving the student address. Other graduates will be participating in the ceremony, and the International Choir will perform special music.
A native of Amarillo, Bruce has served as director since January 2001, previously directing the Christian Education Coordinating Board of the BGCT. He has served in vocational ministry since 1974, serving as music and youth minister in Waco, youth and family minister in Grand Prairie and as pastor in Duke, Okla., Wellington and San Antonio before joining the BGCT in 1997.
Bruce holds a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and both the Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was given an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Dallas Baptist University in August 2005.
He has had extensive involvement in denominational and community service efforts in various cities and has served as an adjunct instructor for both Wayland and DBU. He has served as trustee for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and received a distinguished service award from the university in 2001.
Bruce is founding director of the HealthCare Outreach Network, a consortium of Baptist Health ministries in the U.S. supporting worldwide Baptist Healthcare Ministry, and is involved on the communication and education committees of the Baptist World Alliance.
He and wife Janet have two grown sons, Preston and Jonathan.
