ring ceremony focuses on tradition, loyalty

Graduating senior Jennifer Phillips of El Paso (photo) receives her senior ring from Beverly SteedWayland Baptist University president Dr. Paul Armes at the second annual ring ceremony held by the Association of Former Students on Dec. 12.

The brief ceremony included a charge to loyalty by AFS President Kevin Carter, BBA’93, of Plainview, and a testimony about what the ring means by Rudy Garcia, Jr., (photo) a BSOE graduate from Plainview an Army veteran who served in Iraq, who noted the ring symbolized receiving a quality education, the integrity of the university, never giving up and graduation, the culmination of a dream.

The program – which was open to former students who chose to participate in the re-presentation of their rings – concluded with the singing of the alma mater with all graduates linking hands to represent the unbroken circle of the WBU family.
