Refuses instructions

A new employee was assigned a task and the employee said "No, I don't want to do what you are asking me to do."

Tardiness and absence

It became apparent that one of the employees was often late. One week he was absent for a day and gave no explanation for it.

Lack of follow-through

I had a thorough discussion with an employee about actions that needed to be taken. She agreed to follow through, but never did complete the tasks.

Customer complaints

There have been constant customer complaints about one employee. The employee "forgot" to follow up, did not return calls, was asked two to three times to get back with an answer and did not. More customer complaints followed about the employee not returning or following up.

Competing with the boss

An executive who has a strong financial education and experience questioned his boss, the President of the company, who doesn’t have the same education and doesn’t understand the questions but won’t admit it. The President has a very tenuous relationship with this executive and at times their relationship seems adversarial. The President finally had enough of the situation and terminated the executive.
Constructing a case study

To use a scenario as the basis for a case study, assign names to the characters and add information about the type of business. You could combine elements of various scenarios to present a more complex issue. Prepare questions for your students; here are some examples:
  • What would be the effect of the employee's actions on customers?
  • What would be the effect of the employee's actions on co-workers
  • How should the boss respond?
  • What could the boss have done differently?
  • What could the employee have done differently?
  • What do you think is the best outcome?
  • How does this case study affect your understanding of the workplace?
