Clarifying expectations

One of my employees kept asking questions for clarification. As the employee understood more and more about the position and its responsibilities, she was given more and more responsibilities and work load. She has earned the trust of her managers as someone who can be counted on to do work as directed.


There is this guy at our company who consistently produces results. Instead of waiting for his supervisor to tell him what to do, he is self-directed. Some of the other employees think he is trying too hard.

Practicing business etiquette

Several of the folks at our office have been considered for promotion. I notice that they listen carefully when others talk, sometimes even taking notes. They accept feedback not only from the boss, but even from co-workers. I never see them using a cell phone; they make business calls on the company phone line.

Constructing a case study

To use a scenario as the basis for a case study, assign names to the characters and add information about the type of business. You could combine elements of various scenarios to present a more complex issue. Prepare questions for your students; here are some examples:
  • What would be the effect of the employee's actions on customers?
  • What would be the effect of the employee's actions on co-workers
  • How should the boss respond?
  • What could the boss have done differently?
  • What could the employee have done differently?
  • What do you think is the best outcome?
  • How does this case study affect your understanding of the workplace?
