COURSE NO. AND TITLE: MATH 1305 - Trigonometry
Description: This course develops skills in trigonometric functions, solutions of triangles, trigonometric identities, trigonometric function graphs, and trigonometric forms of complex numbers and vectors.
Text:Trigonometry A Unit Circle Approach, 8th edition; Michael Sullivan
Supplies:textbook, scientific calculator, pencil, paper
Prerequisites: MATH 1304 or equivalent
Placement: This class is intended for students who plan to major or minor in mathematics or science who have not had Trigonometry in high school.
Class Policies:
Attendance:All students are expected to attend all class sessions and are responsible for knowing the material covered. No quizzes or exams can be made up unless arrangements PRIOR to the absence have been made. Any student missing more than 25% of the class will FAIL the class.
Academic Honesty: Disciplinary action for academic misconduct is the responsibility of the faculty member assigned to this course. The faculty member is charged with assessing the gravity of any case of academic dishonesty, and with giving sanctions to any student involved.
Student Expectations
Homework: : Homework will be assigned daily. You should plan on spending at least 2-3 hours on homework after each class period. Homework will be checked every week after it is assigned. In order to be successful in this course, you MUST complete your homework assignments. If you must miss class for a legitimate emergency or problem (ie. Illness, death in the family, etc.), you need to make arrangements to turn in the assignment before class or soon after your return.
Exams/tests: There will be 10 tests, one a week, as well as a comprehensive final exam. You may take the exam early/late in the case of a legitimate emergency, illness, or university-sponsored activity, if you make arrangements with me prior to the absence.
Final: The Final Exam will be comprehensive. All students will be required to take the Final Exam. The Final Exam will be given to you one week before it is due. We will have Pizza and questions on the last meeting.
Grading is accomplished by adding all the points your have earned divided by the total points possible.
A: 90 100 B: 80 89 C: 70 79 D: 60 69 F: Below 60
Course Outline/Outcome Competencies:
Be able to discuss and solve problems in the following areas:
Trigonometric Functions (Ch. 2) Be able to measure and work with angles in degrees and radians, know the properties of trigonometric functions, and be able to graph trigonometric functions.
Analytic Trigonometry (Ch. 3) Know and be able to use trigonometric identities to solve problems and prove other identities, understand and solve problems with inverse trigonometric functions.
Applications of Trig. Functions (Ch. 4) Be able to solve triangles and work problems involving harmonic motion and damped motion.
