Offers an in-depth investigation of the characteristics of ethical and effective management, including an assessment of leadership styles within the context of a Christian value system. Ethical reasoning is developed and applied to a variety of business situations.



After this course you should be able to:

•  Know the business ethics issues, definitions, and frameworks important to organizational ethical decision-making.

•  Know the underlying philosophical base for ethics and values.

•  Recognize ethical issues in business.

•  Relate the significant issues of an ethical controversy in business to moral philosophy, work group influence, corporate culture, and social responsibility.

•  Defend a theory or principle for resolving an ethical dispute in business.

•  Articulate and defend choices in making ethical judgments in business.

•  Examine the consequences of unethical and ethical business decisions.

•  Understand the role of corporate governance and corporate culture in ethical decision-making.

•  Evaluate the role of organizational ethics programs and understand the importance of implementing and auditing ethics and compliance programs.

• Experience current ethical dilemmas through case studies and role-play.

• Demonstrate critical thinking skills through development of an organizational ethics program.

• Examine the similarities and differences of professional codes of ethics: Banking, Medical, Engineering, Law, Finance, etc.

Course Assessments


1. Organizational Ethics Program : From the perspective of an organizational ethics team leader or ethical consultant, write an organization’s ethics program as if you are presenting it to the CEO (that’s me) and the board of directors.

Content: (a) the name and description of your organization with its mission statement, (b) codes of conduct, codes of ethics, and statement of values, (c) the role of leadership, and (d) the manner in which it will be enforced.

Grading: (a) Appropriateness and support of the recommendations in relation to the organization, (b) Clarity of the recommendations, and (c) Adequate coverage of content.


2. Research Paper : 1500 word paper on one of the topics listed below.

Choose a topic : Theory of cognitive moral development; Any of the moral philosophies mentioned in Chapter 5; or Organizational Culture. All topics must be in relation to business ethics.

Grading: (a) Writing quality including grammar, flow, transitions and APA compliance , (b) Sufficiency of the literature to cover the subject, (c) demonstrate an understanding of the subject.


3. Case Studies : Application of the RESOLVEDD strategy to various cases. This strategy is located in the Pfeiffer & Forsberg textbook.

A grade of I is granted only if the student is passing the course, but circumstances beyond the student’s control prevented completion of required course work during the semester & attendance requirements were met. See catalog for further details.

Academic Dishonesty: Students caught cheating, plagiarizing, or knowingly furnishing false information will be dismissed from the course and receive a grade of F for the course.
