RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Writing Center Assistant supports the Writing Center Director by providing writing consultations with students and by maintaining the Writing Center’s academic documents and other records.  This includes meeting with students one-on-one and in an online environment, and processing and/or developing a number of documents, reports, spreadsheets, databases, etc. using a variety of computer, software, and office equipment.  Additional duties include processing the Writing Center’s data; maintaining various office files (faculty documents, student records, registration materials, etc.); providing general oversight of the Writing Center; greeting visitors; maintaining the Writing Center’s phone lines; and assisting the Director in preparing the Writing Center’s schedules and appointments, and in organizing special reports or projects as assigned.

SPECIFIC TASKS

          AND DUTIES:

1. Provide face-to-face and online writing consultation in coordination with other staff members;

2. Display ability to maintain confidentiality when functioning with sensitive material. 

3. Assist with preparation of Writing Center’s documents and reports including processing and maintenance of the Writing Center’s financial records.

4. Develop documents, reports, spreadsheets, databases, etc. as necessary.

5. Establish and maintain various Writing Centers files (budget items, faculty documents, student records, registration materials, etc.).

6. Oversee basic daily operations of Writing Center with minimal or no supervision.

7. Maintain Writing Center’s phone line tactfully and courteously.

8. Greet and interact with Writing Center visitors, other employees, and students in a tactful and courteous manner.

9. Assist with registration as needed, possibly working on Saturday as required for summer registration.

10. Assist faculty clients with Writing Center activities and curriculum related support. 

11. Supervise student employees as necessary.

12. Assist with special projects as assigned.

The above statements are not a complete list of responsibilities and duties performed by employees in this position. Employee may perform other related duties as assigned by the Writing Center Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Academic:

Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred; Some college education required.
    Experience &  Knowledge:

1. Good understanding of the basics of English grammar, usage, etc.

2. Past office-related or clerical experience required.

3. Experience with online environments.

4. Writing Center experience a plus.

5. Ability to apply Christian principles in the workplace.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Must have EXCELLENT verbal and written communication skills; some knowledge of Spanish a plus.

2. Must have excellent computer skills (comfortable with Word, Excel, email, etc.) and be willing to acquire additional computer and technical skills as necessary.

3. Must have excellent time-management skills and be self-motivated and detailed-oriented.

4. Must be able to complete a variety of tasks simultaneously and function within a flexible framework.

     Additional Requirements:

Must be able to pass required Background Checks, which may include a Credit Check.
