Wayland freshman Keean Lee Lilley, 18, of Nazareth, died in a car wreck over Labor Day weekend.
Lilley was driving near Nazareth on CR 523 on Sunday, Sept. 2, when his vehicle crashed into a pole. According to a report by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, officials believe Lilley overcorrected the his 2001 Ford pickup after it veered into a ditch. The vehicle then overturned and struck a pole.
Emergency personnel took Lilley to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, where he was later pronounced dead. Five other passengers in the pickup were taken to an area hospital and released.
KCBD News Channel 11 reported Lilley as the fifth person from the South Plains to die in wrecks over the Labor day weekend.
Lilley graduated from Nazareth High School in 2007 where he played football and baseball. He enrolled at Wayland this year and was a member of the Pioneer baseball team.
Head baseball coach Brad Bass told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal he saw Lilley in just four practices this year and met him during a summer tryout.
“I asked him if he would mind playing on one of our sub-varsity teams, and he said, ‘I’ll do anything to play college baseball,’ “ Bass said.
