Dr. J. H. Wayland and Dr. Armes with Students - Spanning the years

Members of the Wayland community have been dreaming big for over a century.  Founded in 1908 by pioneers committed to the value of education -- and named for Dr. James Henry Wayland who offered $10,000 and 25 acres of land to make the dream a reality -- WBU continues to be a pioneering presence in higher education on the plains of West Texas and beyond.

Wayland's mission is to educate students in an academically challenging learning-focused and distinctively Christian environment for professional success and service to God and humankind.  We're proud to lead students of all ages to integrate faith and learning into their lives, to be productive members of their communities, and to serve both God and neighbor (whether local or global).

Why Wayland?  The dream of our founders and the mandate of our mission shine brightly today.  We hope to pass this torch on to you so that you’ll carry the light of education, faith, service, discovery and dreams into Wayland’s future.

WBU distinctively pursues this pioneering mission with an notable record of achievement over the past century-plus, including:

*  our identity as the oldest university in continuous existence on the High Plains of Texas

*  having at one point the highest percentage of international students of any college or university in the country

*  taking the unprecedented step in 1951, years before the civil rights movement made notable gains, of being the first liberal arts college in the South to voluntarily integrate black students being admitted on an equal basis as white students

*  illuminating the Kaltwasser Flame on our Mabee Learning Resources Center, the largest back-lit faceted stained glass sculpture in the world

*  our women's basketball team, the Flying Queens, remains the only women's squad in history to win 1,300 games and have set an all-time collegiate record for the longest winning streak (of 131 games in the 1950s)

*  possessing a system-wide enrollment which puts us in the top 5 largest Southern Baptist universities in the U.S.
