Pioneer Women Win First Meet
The Pioneer women’s cross country team won their first meet in more than a decade with a decisive victory at the Mike Boit Invitational held at Ned Houk Park in Clovis. The WBU women tallied 72 points, 10 more than second place Texas Tech and 15 points over host Eastern New Mexico University.
Junior Kristen Raines of Mansfield ran a personal best 19:08 for a fifth place finish to lead the Pioneers. Jennifer Baker, a senior from Canyon, was 14th with a 19:48, followed closely by freshman Erin Britton of Whiteface and LaVernia sophomore Karley Trammell who finished 16th and 17th with times of 20:01 and 20:02.
Elva Pedroza, a sophomore from Seymour, ran the course in 20:06 to come in 20th.
Pioneer coach Brian Whitlock said he was very pleased with his team’s performance.
“I knew we were going to be good, but to go out and win the first meet of the season is phenomenal. Kristen ran the best race of her life, and everyone else stepped up and did their jobs. The freshmen were understandably nervous going in, but they performed well and should only get better with time and experience.”
The men’s race was not scored due to an error on the course. The Pioneers were ranked 28th in the NAIA’s preseason poll.
Both the men’s and women’s team will compete once again on Saturday at the Greyhound Invitational in Albuquerque.
