NAIA OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

Sergiy Oliynyk won his second straight national decathlon title at the 2007 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Fresno Pacific University.

The junior from Odessa, Ukraine was in a third place tie with Oklahoma Baptist's Jonathan Hilton, nearly 300 points behind the leader after Thursday’s first five events, but came back to total 6,733 points, 100 points in front Hilton who finished second.

After briefly falling into fifth place early Friday after a disappointing showing in the discus throw, Oliynyk was able to take advantage of a no-height in the pole vault by the University of British Columbia’s Reid Gustavson, who had maintained the lead throughout the first seven events, to move into second.

Oliynyk then moved into the top spot with a huge throw of 170’5’ in the javelin, and then was able to hold on in the 1500 meters to defend his 2006 title.

He began the competition on Thursday with a tenth place finish in the 100 meters, had a fourth place showing in the long jump, then won the shot put to put himself into second place overall. He retained his spot in second after the high jump when he tied for third, but fell back with a ninth place finish in the 400 meters.

Also on Thursday, freshman thrower Brandon Mansfield picked up a point in the hammer throw with an eighth place finish (172-09). Fellow freshmen Jeff Coleman finished tneth (170-02) and Zach Saldivar was 25th (157-00).

SOONER ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two athletes from Wayland Baptist University took top honors at the 13th Annual Sooner Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Hilliard Field.  Akisha Simmons, a senior sprinter from El Paso, Tex., scored points in six events, including a first place finish in the 100 meters to win Most Valuable Athlete honors on the women’s side, and Sergiy Oliynyk, a multi-event athlete from Odessa, Ukraine, scored points in five events to win the men’s high point honors for the second straight year.   Wayland coach Scott Weiser was also honored as Women’s Coach of the Year.  Both the Pioneer men’s and women’s teams placed second behind conference champion Oklahoma Baptist University.  The Pioneer men scored 142 points, while the women tallied 178.

Nine WBU athletes were named SAC Champions in 10 individual events.  Two of the women’s relay teams were also crowned as conference champions.  The sprint relay team of Patricia Mayers, Simmons, Keliesha Ross and Caroline Oladipo, won in a time of 47.39, while the team of Jennifer Baker, Elva Pedroza, Kydia Echols and Erin Britton won the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:23.98, breaking the SAC meet record of 9:34.47 set in 2002.

Besides the points she earned in the 100-meters and on the 4x100 relay, Simmons also scored points as part of the 4x400 relay team, which finished second.  She had a second place finish in the 200-meters, was third in the high jump, and came in fourth in the 400-meters.  Oliynyk won both the triple jump and shot put, finished second in the high jump and javelin, and was fourth in the long jump.

The WBU women sprinters had 1-2-3 finishes in both the 100- and 200-meters.  In the 100, Mayers and Ross finished behind Simmons, while Mayers won the 200, followed by Simmons and Ross.  Junior Caroline Oladipo, who won both the long jump and the triple jump, finished sixth in both the sprint races.

Mayers, the NAIA Indoor Champion in the 400-meters, finished second in the outdoor event on Saturday.  She was beaten by Oklahoma Baptist’s Sherene Pinnock who set a new meet record with a time of 53.62.  Pinnock also broke the record in winning the 400-meter hurdles.  Ross was fifth in the 400-meters.

Three Pioneer women also earned points in the 800-meter run.  Britton, a sophomore from Whiteface, had a third place finish, while fellow sophomores Pedroza and Echols placed fifth and sixth.

Britton won the 1,500 meter crown, finishing almost eight seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.  Baker came in fifth in that race, and also earned points with third place finishes in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Kim Gilder, the MVA at last year’s SAC meet, won the shot put on Saturday, and was the runner-up in both the discus and hammer throws.

Rounding out the scoring on the women’s side was Analicia Estrada, whom Weiser borrowed from the Pioneer volleyball team.  Estrada, participating in her first-ever collegiate track meet, picked up two points in the javelin throw with a fifth place finish.

Freshman Antipah Sugut was the lone Pioneer men’s runner to capture an individual title.  Sugut won the 5,000 meter run and was second in the 1,500-meters.

In the field events, freshman Jeff Coleman and Zach Saldivar of Olton, had a 1-2 finish in the hammer throw, both the national qualifying marks.  Another freshman, Brad Wall, had a fourth place throw in the event.  Brandon Mansfield, yet another first year Pioneer, finished second in both the shot put and discus.  Saldivar and Wall also earned points in the shot with fifth and sixth place finishes, and Coleman, Wall and Saldivar were fourth, fifth and sixth in the discus.

Sophomore Dominic Palmer and senior Justas Mikelionis contributed with points in three events.  Palmer was second in the long jump, sixth in the 100-meter dash, and ran on the 4x100 meter relay team, while Mikelionis had a third place finish in the triple jump, was fourth in the high jump, and fifth in the long jump.

Freshman Brentson Smith had a fourth place finish in the 400-meters, A.J. Hernandez was sixth in the 800-meters, and Eric Kosecki came in fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.

WHITLOCK NAMED HEAD COACH

Wayland Baptist University introduced Brian Whitlock as head of the track and field program at a press conference held this afternoon in the Harley Redin Athletic Hall of Honor.

Whitlock came to Wayland three years ago from Oklahoma Baptist University to take over as head of the Pioneer cross country team and to serve as assistant track and field coach.  A 2001 graduate of OBU where he was a Sooner Athletic Conference Cross Country Champion and a NAIA All-American, Whitlock has helped turn the Pioneer cross country program from an after-thought to a national contender.

In his first year at WBU, Whitlock was named the Sooner Athletic Conference and Region VI Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year after leading the Pioneers to a second place finish.  He was also named the 2006 Women’s Conference Coach of the Year.  The Pioneer men’s team qualified for the NAIA Cross Country Championships the past two years.  They were ranked ninth in the final NAIA Top 25 in 2005 and were 14th in 2006.  Two of his runners earned NAIA All-American recognition and captured individual conference championships.

The Wayland women, who were ranked nationally in 2006 for the first time in over a decade, also qualified for the national championships last fall with a second place conference and regional finish.

“I am very excited and happy about the opportunity to be the next head coach,” says Whitlock.  “It means a lot to me to be here for three years and then be elevated into this position.  I have really enjoyed my time here.  I feel like I have worked hard and had some success, and I am glad for the opportunity given to me to take over the Track and Field side of things.  I hope to carry on the continued success of the Wayland Baptist Track and Field/Cross Country Teams, and to see the numbers continue to grow.”

TCR RACE PRODUCTIONS AND TEXAS TECH OPEN RESULTS

The Wayland Baptist track and field teams went in two different directions this weekend. The sprinters and throwers traveled to Albuquerque for the TCR Race Productions Invitational, while the distance runners took the short drive to Lubbock for the Texas Tech Indoor Open.

In Albuquerque, one WBU women's indoor record was broken, five new automatic qualifying times were set, three new provisional marks were reached, and five old qualifying marks were improved upon.

The Pioneers were competing as the only NAIA school at Albuquerque's Convention Center. The other universities represented were all NCAA Division I schools, including Brigham Young, the University of New Mexico, Arizona, Arizona State, Rice and the Air Force Academy.

Junior Patricia Mayers set a new WBU indoor mark in the 400 meters with a time of 55.62. The old mark of 56.21 was shared by Althea Thomas (1988) and Magally Segovia (1993). Mayers, who finished second in the 400, also improved her previous NAIA qualifying time in the 200 meters with a fourth place finish and a time of 24.58.

Other new automatic qualifying marks were reached by Akisha Simmons in the 60 meters, Equilla Weatherton in the 200 meters, and Jason Carter in both the 200 meters and 400 meters. Carter, along with A.J. Hernandez, Brentson Smith and Dominic Palmer, also ran an automatic qualifying time of 3:19.59 in the 4x400 meter relay.

The new provisional marks were made by Palmer in the 60 meters and the 200 meters, and Smith in the 400 meters.

Weatherton (7.56) and Keliesha Ross (7.59) both improved on their times in the 60 meters. Jeree Green bettered her provisional qualifying mark in the 200 meters with a 26.25, and the 4x400 relay team of Green, Mayers, Simmons and Ross just missed setting a new record with a time of 3:51.45. (The current record is 3:51.19 set at the 1988 NAIA Championships.)

At Lubbock, three new automatic qualifying marks were set, along with two provisional times. Sophomore Kydia Echols finished first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.68, Erin Britton ran a 2:58.92 for a first place finish in the 1000 meters, and the 4x400 meter relay team of Echols, Elva Pedroza, Britton, and Jennifer Baker qualified with a time of 4:02.71.

Freshmen Kirby Dunn with a 2:32.36 in the 1000 meters, and Antipah Sugut with an 8:48.41 in the 3000 meters hit the NAIA’s provisional marks.
