OLIYNYK WINS DECATHLON
NAIA OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS  (4/22/06)

The Wayland Baptist University Pioneer track and field team has had many NAIA National Champions during its storied history, but Sergiy Oliynyk became the first Pioneer to win a gold medal winner in the decathlon Friday at the NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Oliynyk totaled 7,198 points over a two-day period to beat second place finisher Brian Bernard of Azusa Pacific University by 344 points. Bernard won the pentathlon at the NAIA Indoor Championships in March by just 116 points over Oliynyk.

Oliynyk, a native of the Ukraine, had just a 27 point lead over Bernard after the first day of the meet. The WBU freshman started the competition with a sixth place finish in the 100-meters (11.34), took third in the long jump (22-03), won the shot put (45-08.50), placed second in the high jump (6-03.25), and then finished sixth in the 400-meter dash (52.03) to complete day one with 3,718 points.

He increased his lead during Friday’s events, finishing sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.43), and then winning the discus throw (128-08). Bernard won the pole vault (15-11), while Oliynyk two places back in third (14-11), but the Sooner Athletic Conference’s 2006 Most Valuable Male Athlete came back with a second place finish in the javelin (173-06), out-throwing Bernard by almost 35 feet (138-07). In the final event of the decathlon, the 1,500-meter run, Oliynyk ran a 4:48.66 to Bernard’s 4:54.44 to capture the gold.

One other Pioneer joined Oliynyk by bringing home All-American honors.  Freshman Vincent Tanui finished sixth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:56.99.

Senior Richard Varnon closed out his college career placing eighth in the Discus.  He also finished 9th in the hammer and 12th in the shot.  Joel O'Hair, another senior, just missed earning a point with his ninth place finish in the men's marathon.
