MEET THE COACHES
Brad Bass - Pioneer Head CoachCoach Brad Bass is in his 13th season as head coach of the Pioneer baseball program. He began his college playing career at Ranger Junior College. While at Ranger he played on a team that won the 1978 Junior College World Series. From Ranger Junior College Coach Bass went on to play two years at Hardin-Simmons University, where he also served as an assistant coach for 5 years. Before coming to Wayland Baptist, Coach Bass was the head baseball coach at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. A graduate of Connally High School in Waco, Coach Bass experienced his best seasons at Wayland Baptist in 2000 and in 2004. Those years the Pioneers won 40 games, the most wins in a season in school history. The Pioneers compete in the Sooner Athletic Conference, arguably the toughest NAIA conference in the nation. They have reached the NAIA Region VI Championship Tournament each of the past four seasons, finishing third in 2006. Coach Bass and his wife Sally, have three children: Calvin, 18; Meredith, 17; and Will, 13. |
Josh Milner - Assistant CoachCoach Josh Milner is in his fourth year as the Pioneer's assistant coach. A native of Phoenix, AZ, he played two years for the Pioneers after transferring from Glendale Community College in 2002. As the WBU catcher, he helped lead the team to its first-ever appearance in the NAIA Region VI Championship Tournament in 2003. An '03 graduate of WBU who is currently working on a master's degree in Management, Coach Milner spent the summer of 2006 as head coach of the Orlando Hammers, an Athletes in Action sponsored team in the Florida Collegiate Summer League. Coach Milner and his wife, Melissa, who is also a Wayland graduate, are the parents of a one-year old daughter, Ryann. |
Jeremiah Saiz - Assistant/Junior Varsity CoachCoach Jeremiah Saiz is no stranger to WBU baseball. A 2000 graduate of Wayland, he spent four years as a member of the Pioneer outfield from 1996-1999. He joined Coach Bass's staff a year ago, serving as the outfielder's coach and as head junior varsity coach. After obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Coach Saiz spent three years as a teacher and coach at Coronado Junior High School in Plainview. In addition, he served as an assistant coach for the Plainview High School varsity baseball team. Currently Coach Saiz is a graduate student in Organizational Management, and is Resident Hall Supervisor of McDonald Hall. |
Brandon Henegar - Pitching CoachCoach Brandon Henegar is also in his second year as the Pioneer pitching coach. A 2001 graduate of Wayland, he pitched four seasons for Coach Bass and the Pioneers, setting numerous career records. Currently he is second in career wins, third in innings pitched, appearances and complete games, and fourth in strikeouts. Following graduation, Coach Henegar spent one year in the private sector before becoming pitching coach for the Plainview High School varsity baseball team, a title he held for four years. He is now a physical education teacher at LaMesa Elementary. He and his wife, Karla, a teacher and head volleyball coach at PHS, have a son, Kyler who is 3. |
Tommy McMillan - Volunteer Assistant CoachA long-time supporter of Wayland baseball, Coach McMillan joined the Pioneer coaching staff last year as coach of the WBU infielders. A native of Plainview, he is a 1976 graduate of Texas Tech University where he spent three seasons as a member of the Red Raider baseball team. Coach McMillan has been a part of the Plainview Noon Optimist's Summer Baseball Program almost continuously as a player, coach, umpire, baseball committee member, league representative, and tournament official since 1969, and was inducted into the Southwest Regional Babe Ruth Hall of Fame in 2004. An original member and chairman of the Going the Distance Committee, which was the driving force behind the development of Wilder Field, Coach McMillan has also served as a coach for the WBU Summer Collegiate Baseball League since it's inception three years ago. Coach McMillan and his wife, Susan, have a daughter, Lori, and her husband, James; a son, Chance, and his wife, Kelsey; and are the proud grandparents of two granddaughters, Rileigh and Madeline Johnston, and are expecting a third grandchild at the end of May. |
Jeff Hanson - Grad AssistantCoach Hanson is in his first year at WBU. A 2004 graduate of North Park University, Coach Hanson served last year as the Viking's bullpen coach and spent the summer as head coach of Athletes in Action's Bolivar Athletics of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. As a Viking pitcher, Hanson set North Park career records in strikeouts (248), innings pitched (306.2) and pick-offs (32). He is third in career appearances (50) and holds three of the top eight spots on North Park’s single-season strikeout list. Three times, Hanson was among the top two in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) in strikeouts and innings pitched. As a senior, Hanson was named academic all-conference and he received the CCIW’s Merle Chapman Leadership Award. |
