SAC TOURNEY BEGINS WEDNESDAY

WBU is the fourth seed going into next week's Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament at Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, OK. They will take on #3 Oklahoma Baptist at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. The Pioneers kept the #4 spot even though they were swept by Lubbock Christian in the final series of the season.

The Chaparrals took game two by a 14-0 score, game three by a score of 4-2, and won the final game 12-5. WBU was victimized by a scoreless streak of 27 innings that dated back to the fourth inning of the 13-inning loss to OBU and extended through the fourth inning of the third game against LCU when Sam Hayden hit a two-run single to right field.   The Pioneers managed just five hits in the double-header at Lubbock, two in the opener and three in the nightcap, and wasted another good pitching performance, this time by freshman Todd Jeffress who allowed just three earned runs on six hits in the 4-2 loss.

In Saturday's game, WBU took a 3-1 lead in the second inning when Chance McMillan and Brett Dunlap hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning.  Lucio Castro advanced the runners when he laid down a bunt single.  With two outs, Jorge Rubio singled in a run, then Chasen Deleon smashed a two-run double that hit the left field fence.  The Chaps tied it bakc up in the top of the third, but Joe Covarrubias led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run, his tenth of the season, to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead.

LCU scored six runs on seven hits and a costly Pioneer error in the fifth inning to take the lead for good.  McMillan picked up an RBI in the bottom half of the inning to score the final WBU run.  Covarrubias had three hits in the game, including the homer and a double.

PIONEERS FALL TO LCU

Over 400 fans witnessed a classic pitcher’s duel in the opening game of a four-game series between Wayland Baptist’s Pioneers and the Chaparrals of Lubbock Christian University last night at Wilder Field. In his final game in front of the home crowd, Pioneer career strikeout leader Taylor Allen gave up just six hits over 7-1/3 innings, striking out nine, but lost by a score of 3-0 to fellow senior Brandon Newman of LCU. Newman threw his fourth complete-game shutout of the season to remain undefeated with an 8-0 record. The loss drops WBU to 29-26 on the season and 13-12 in conference play, while LCU improves to 43-13 and 17-8.

The Pioneers managed seven hits off Newman, including two each by Jorge Rubio and Joe Covarrubias, but reached third base just once in the game. First baseman Jacob Palomarez singled through the right side to lead off the bottom of the fourth then went to second when Brian Hewitt was hit by a pitch. After a failed bunt attempt and a strikeout, Palomarez stole third, but was left stranded.

WBU threatened again in the bottom of the eighth, when Rubio and Chasen Deleon hit back-to-back singles with one out, but Newman forced the Pioneers into a basic 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. The Pioneers, who are in the midst of a 15-inning scoreless drought, abandoned seven men on base, while LCU left just four.

The two teams will meet in a double-header this afternoon at Hays Field in Lubbock beginning at 4 p.m. then close out the series with a single game Saturday evening at Wilder Field. Seven Wayland seniors will be honored prior to the first pitch at 6 p.m.

In other Sooner Athletic Conference action on Thursday, Oklahoma City University defeated Southern Nazarene 8-4, Oklahoma Baptist defeated St. Gregory’s 3-1, and Northwestern Oklahoma State split a double-header with the University of Science and Arts, 11-2 and 1-5.

Pioneers Remain in Third After Split with USAO

The Pioneers split a four-game Sooner Athletic Conference series with USAO this weekend, winning games one (7-1) and four (8-2), but falling in games two (3-4) and three (7-4). WBU remains in third place in the conference because Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma Baptist also split their four-game series. LCU is in second place, one game ahead of the Pioneers, while OBU is one game back. Wayland travels to Shawnee next weekend to face the Bison, then close out the season against the Chaps.

Senior Taylor Allen pitched a four-hit complete game in the 7-1 opening win over USAO. Allen allowed just one run while striking out seven Drover batters in getting his sixth win of the season. Jacob Palomarez went two-for-three in the game with two RBIs, and Deacon Lucas hit his second homer of the season, a two-run shot in the third.

In Friday's nightcap, junior Michael Cervantes held USAO to just three hits and struck out eight in seven innings of work, but a costly Pioneer error led to two unearned runs.   The Pioneers managed just five hits against the Drover starter. Trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, Jorge Rubio hit a one out, two-run homer to left field to pull WBU to close the game within one, but a ground out and a fly out silenced the rally.

The Pioneers got nine hits but left 11 men on base in Saturday's opening 7-4 loss. Sam Hayden and Lucas had two hits each for Wayland and Joe Covarrubias hit his eighth home run of the year, a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning. Rubio and Palomarez had the other two RBIs for the Pioneers.

Freshman Todd Jeffress fanned seven batters on the way to his fifth win in the final game of the series. Jeffress allowed seven hits and two unearned runs, both with two outs in the seventh, in the 8-2 complete game victory.  Brian Hewitt went two-for-three in the game with a homer and two RBIs. Chasen Deleon also picked up two hits, Palomarez knocked in two runs, and Lucio Castro recorded his second double of the year.

Bats Slow to Wake in Loss

The Pioneers were shut out for the first five innings, then managed to score two runs without getting a hit during the sixth in a 6-3 loss to Eastern New Mexico.

WBU eventually got nine hits in the game, but could push only one run across the plate with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh.  The Pioneers eventually left 10 runners on base.

Six pitchers were used by Wayland with Gary Gates getting his first loss of the season. The WBU defense turned three double plays and Brian Hewitt had two hits and a RBI to lead the Pioneer offense.

Pioneers Take Three of Four From SNU

Wayland Baptist won three out of four Sooner Athletic Conference games from Southern Nazarene at Wilder Field to remain in third place in the conference standings with a 10-6 record.

On Thursday evening the Pioneers had to come from behind in both contests. In game one, the Pioneers trailed 4-0 after the first half inning of play, but came back with four of their own in their first at bat, and went on to a 13-8 win. In the second game, WBU waited until the final two innings of play to score and earn a 4-3 victory.

In the first game, SNU scored all four of their first innings runs with two outs. Pioneer starting pitcher Taylor Allen struck out the first two batters he faced, but then walked the next two. Back-to-back singles followed by a double down the right field line scored the four runs before another strikeout ended the inning.

Brad Wuensche led off the bottom of the first with a walk, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a fly out to center, Chasen Deleon singled through the left side. Jacob Palomarez followed with a shot off the pitcher’s leg to bring in Wuensche. Deleon then crossed the plate on Brian Hewitt’s sacrifice fly to deep left field. Trey Roberson tied the score at four with a two-run homer to left center field.

The Pioneers picked up two more runs in the second and four in the third on a Deacon Lucas walk, four singles by Sam Hayden, Wuensche, Jorge Rubio, and Deleon. Southern Nazarene pulled to within 11-8 with four runs in the top of the fifth, but single runs by the Pioneers in the fourth, fifth and sixth sealed the win.

Daniel Diaz-Gonzalez was awarded the win in relief, his second of the season. Wayland had 13 hits in the game, led by Deleon, who went 4-for-4, and Todd Jeffress, who was 3-for-4.

The Pioneers led off the night cap on Thursday with two straight hits by Wuensche and Rubio, but were unable to generate a run. SNU picked up a run in the top of the second and two more in the fifth to go up 3-0.

Crimson Storm starting pitcher Jonathan Dieball hit Roberson with a pitch to start the bottom of the second, but retired the next 11 Pioneer batters. With the Pioneers trailing and with just two hits going into their half of the sixth, Coach Brad Bass looked to the bench for some help. Pinch hitter Lucio Castro delivered with a single. Wuensche followed with his second single, then after a strikeout, Deleon came through with a RBI double to left center. Palomarez knocked in Wuensche and Deleon with a strike up the middle that tied the game at three.

Pioneer starter Michael Cervantes struck out the SNU lead-off hitter to start the seventh, but after walking the next batter, Bass moved Hewitt to pitcher and brought Joe Covarrubias in off the bench to replace Hewitt at third. After giving up a shallow fly ball that landed just in front of Lucas, the Pioneer leftfielder, Hewitt forced the Storm's clean-up hitter into a 643 double play.

Covarrubias was first to the plate in the bottom of the seventh for the Pioneers. On a 2-2 count, the junior from Yuma, AZ, belted a no-doubt-about-it line drive shot over the left field wall to give WBU the one-run win.

On Friday, the Pioneers lost game one, 7-4, but came back to take the second game, 6-4.

In Friday's opener, WBU fell behind early when the Crimson Storm scored four runs in the top of the first. The Pioneers responded with one in the bottom of the inning and another in the third to pull to within two, but SNU got another couple of runs across in the fourth to extend their lead to 6-2.

The Pioneers got two back in the fourth when Trey Roberson led the inning off with a single. Joe Covarrubias then launched his second homer of the series over the left field fence, much to the delight of over 300 College Hill Elementary Accelerated Readers in attendance at the game.

SNU extended the lead to three with a run in the top of the sixth. The Pioneers threatened in their last at bat, loading the bases on three walks with one out, but failed to get a run across.  Senior centerfield Jorge Rubio had two of the five Pioneer hits in the game.

Just like their other two wins against the Storm, the Pioneers had to come from behind in the final game of the four-game series.  After falling down a run in the top of the first, the Pioneers tied it up in their first at bat with a RBI single by Hewitt. A single up the middle by Deleon that scored Castro in the second put WBU up 2-1 after two, but an infield single and two Wayland errors gave SNU a 3-2 lead after three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, WBU regained the lead, 4-3, after a double to right center by Castro, an infield single by senior Chance McMillan, a walk, a fielder’s choice and a throwing error by the Storm.  Pioneer freshman starting pitcher Todd Jeffress retired the side in the top half of the fifth, but after another WBU error in the sixth resulted in SNU’s third unearned run of the game, the score was tied at four.

McMillan led off the Wayland half of the sixth with a double down the left field line off of reliever Ryan Andrews, the Storm’s bullpen ace.  Deacon Lucas, who pinch ran for McMillan, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored the winning run when Brad Wuensche’s suicide squeeze attempt was nullified when that pitch went wild as well.  Rubio, who doubled to right center, scored the final WBU run on a single by Deleon.

Seth Andrews got the win for the Pioneers in relief of Jeffress, who went 5-1/3 innings, giving up four runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts. Hewitt picked up his ninth save of the season by retiring the Storm in order in the seventh. Deleon, Hewitt, Castro and McMillan each had two hits for WBU.

WBU/McMurry Split

The Wayland Baptist Pioneer baseball team managed to come back from the brink once, but couldn’t manage it twice as they split a doubleheader with McMurry University 14-13 and 1-13 at windy Wilder Field.

Down 12-2 after two-and-a-half innings in the first game, the Pioneers fought back with six runs in the third, one each in the fourth and fifth, and three in the sixth to tie the score at 13.

After closer Brian Hewitt shut down the Indians in the top of the seventh, WBU shortstop Chasen Deleon led off the bottom of the inning with his second double of the game, a shot down the left field line. Following a ground out to the pitcher, Hewitt advanced Deleon to third on a fly-out to centerfield. Junior right fielder Trey Roberson, who went three-for-four with two doubles in the opener, belted another hard shot down the left field line that scored Deleon and gave Wayland the one-run victory.

The Pioneers had 18 hits in the game. Deleon went three-for-four, including the two doubles and a solo home run. Catcher Sam Hayden also homered, a three-run shot in the sixth. Other Pioneers with multiple hits were Jacob Palomarez (3-5), Todd Jeffress (2-4), Jorge Rubio (2-5) and Hayden (2-4).

In the nightcap, the Indians belted six extra-base hits, including three home runs to earn the five-inning win. McMurry starter Andy McDougal held WBU to just five hits, two by Rubio and one each by Brad Wuensche, Palomarez and Chance McMillan. The Pioneers managed their lone run in the first when Rubio doubled, advanced to third on an Indian error and scored on Deleon’s sacrifice fly.

The Pioneers, 23-17 on the season and third in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 7-5 record, will return to conference play with a four-game series against Southern Nazarene University set for Thursday and Friday at Wilder Field. SNU is 23-19 and 4-8 in SAC play, but the Storm are coming off a weekend series in which they defeated Oklahoma Baptist three-out-of-four. First pitch Thursday is set for 4 p.m., while Friday’s twin-bill will start at 1 p.m.

Pioneers Sweep St. Greg's

By: Sara Allbritton

The Pioneer baseball team moved into third place in the Sooner Athletic Conference after a four-game sweep over St. Gregory's in Shawnee, OK.

In the first game, the Pioneers offense was the key to their 12-8 win. The bats were scorching as the Pioneers' belted out 19 hits, including a three-run homer by Deacon Lucas. Lucas, who went 3-for-4, also had two of the five WBU doubles. Also hitting well for the Pioneers were Chase DeLeon who was also 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Jacob Palomarez who went 3-for-5.

PIONEERS GET FIRST WIN SINCE 2000 AGAINST OCU

Wayland Baptist Pioneer baseball players Brad Wuensche and Jorge Rubio have played Oklahoma City University 17 times over the course of the last four years and until late Saturday afternoon at Wilder Field in the final game of a four game series, the two seniors had never beaten the Stars. Thanks to two newcomers from Arizona, that long streak of futility has finally ended. Junior pitcher Michael Cervantes threw a three-hit gem while junior shortstop Chasen Deleon hit a grand slam and a three-run homer to give the Pioneers a 14-2 victory over the nation’s second-ranked team.

“Awesome,” said Rubio, when asked how it feels to finally take one from the Stars. “That’s the only way to describe it. We finally did it.”

Wuensche, who had an unusual RBI double in the second when he bunted past the drawn in infield, echoed Rubio’s remark. “It ’s just awesome. It took a long time, but we finally made it happen.”

For Deleon it was his first two homers of the season, and his first-ever grand slam. “I’ve never had one. It feels great. He threw me a fastball inside on the first one, and I think he hung a slider on the second.”

“I was confident that we were going to get this last one,” said Deleon, whose three-run homer, in the bottom of the fifth inning, saved the Pioneers from having to play the sixth and seventh innings. OCU had scored 22 runs during those two innings in Friday’s second game and in Saturday’s first. “We were hitting the ball well and Mike was pitching a great game, but I knew that I was going to get that last run across the plate.”

Joining Deleon in the home run parade was junior Trey Roberson who had a two-run shot in the first after Jacob Palomarez had belted a two-run double to right center. Wuensche’s bunt double scored the only Pioneer run in the second to give the home team a 5-0 lead.

After OCU got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth on two singles and a double, Plainview’s Chance McMillan led off the bottom of the inning with a loop single to right. Catcher Brett Dunlap doubled down the right field line, advancing McMillan to third. Wuensche was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Deleon who launched the ball over the left field fence.

Cervantes walked the lead off batter in the top half of the fifth, but retired the next three Stars to escape the inning unscathed. In their portion of what turned out to be the final inning with the score 9-2, the Pioneers loaded the bases on a double to right center by junior third baseman Joe Covarrubias, a walk by Todd Jeffress, and a hit batsmen in the form of McMillan. Dunlap walked to record an RBI and pinch hitter Sam Hayden made it 11-2 on a fielder’s choice. Then with two outs and runners on the corners, Deleon hit an 0-2 pitch just over the left field wall into the visitor’s dugout to give the Pioneers their first victory over the Stars since April 2000 and only the fourth in school history.

In Saturday’s first game, senior pitcher Taylor Allen made a little history of his own when he became the WBU all-time strikeout leader. The Littlefield native struck out five Stars to give him 216 career K’s, moving ahead of Daniel Franklin who recorded 213 strikeouts from 2000 to 2003.

Allen held OCU to just one run in the first four innings of play, retiring the Stars in order in the first, second and fourth. Palomarez tied the game at one in the Pioneer half of the fourth on a solo shot down the right field line. Oklahoma City’s bats woke up in the fifth, though, when they scored four runs.

The Pioneers answered with four of their own on a two-run homer by Rubio, a walk and two singles and an error, but the Stars rallied with four runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh off Wayland’s relief pitchers to take the game 16-6.

On Friday, the Stars belted five two-run homers in the first two innings of the first game to jump out to a 14-0 lead. Pioneer junior reliever Daniel Diaz-Gonzales came in in the top of the third, and managed to hold OCU to just one more run, a home run, in the final three innings giving OCU a 15-1 victory. Wayland recorded a run in the bottom of the fourth when Brian Hewitt walked, advanced to second, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

WBU had just two hits off starter Mike Mlotkowski on singles by Brad Wuensche and Trey Roberson.

The second game started much better for the Pioneers. Freshman pitcher Todd Jeffress, throwing mainly off-speed pitches, kept the Stars off-balance in the first five innings. The former Plainview Bulldog allowed just three runs, two of which were unearned and struck out six in his five and one-third innings of work.

The Pioneers took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Jorge Rubio led off with a single and scored on Jacob Palomarez’s double down the right field line. Hewitt then smacked a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Pioneers their first lead of the series.

Jeffress protected the lead, retiring the Stars in order in the top of the fourth and allowing just a single in the fifth. Matt Imwalle of OCU blasted his third homer of the day to lead off the sixth to tie the score at four. After Jeffress walked the next batter, who was then sacrificed to second, Pioneer coach Brad Bass went to his bullpen and the bottom fell out. Oklahoma City scored 11 runs in the final two innings to take game two by a score of 14-4.
