CLASS NOTES FOR FACULTY/STAFF/TRUSTEES

 

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of LENA FAYE WOFFORD ALFORD, AA’41, BS’49, who died on February 21, 2005. She served as assistant vice president for Student Development and Director of Student Services at Wayland from 1965-1985. Lena Faye attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood and graduated from Wayland Baptist University in 1941 with an associate degree and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1949. She graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with her master of religious education degree in 1950. She served at East Texas State University as Baptist Student Union director and at Midwestern University as the Baptist Student Union director and Bible Chair teacher for 15 years before coming back to Wayland. Lena Faye was a member of First Baptist Church, Las Camaradas Club, former president of the Business and Professional Women's Club, and was a volunteer for Hospice of the Plains where she was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 1995. She also volunteered with VistaCare Hospice and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 1999. Lena Faye met Dallas Alford at Wayland and they were married on Jan. 20, 1943, in Plainview. He served as head of the music department at Wayland and was killed in an automobile crash on Jan. 6, 1948. Dr. TRAVIS HART, BA’68, pastor of First Baptist Church, Plainview, officiated at the service, and EDDIE TURNER, BA’72, manager of the University Store at Wayland, provided the music.

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. WAYNE ALFORD, former Academic Dean at Wayland. Services were held at Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson, Tennessee. He taught on the college and graduate level for 25 years. He served as Academic Dean at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi before he came to Wayland. In 1973 he was invited to join the faculty at Union University as chairman of the Division of Professional Studies and head of the Education Department. After a short "early retirement" in 1990-92, he returned to the ranks of college teaching at Lane College where he served as Professor of Speech and Theatre. Dr. Alford's many hobbies were acting and otherwise working in the theatre, and writing for the stage. He has published numerous articles on various topics for national publications and is the author of one book and some 20-30 plays, most of which were performed in area theatres. Dr. Alford's All Tied Up in Knots and its sequel, All Tied Up in Knots, II, which played at the Little Theatre in the Civic Center in Jackson in 1985 and 1987 won recognition for him and director wife, Pat from Governor Ned McWherter for their contributions to the education and culture of children in Tennessee. Among his survivors are wife Pat Gilliland Alford of Jackson and by his children: Rogena and husband, Petty Officer Scott Lewis of Chicago, IL; Deborah and husband Dr. Donald P. Bell of Metairie, LA; and Robert Wayne and his wife Dianna Alford of St. Augustine, FL; their mother, La Nelle Alford of Jackson; six grandchildren, two stepsons, a sister and a brother.

Dr. PHIL ALMES, former professor of mathematics at Wayland, now professor emeritus of mathematics, and wife Marian have moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where they are enjoying their retirement. Dr. SAMUEL J. AYERS, adjunct professor at the Wayland Lubbock Campus, has been named National Educator of the Year by Christian Educators Association International. He teaches a graduate process writing class for Wayland and is a core knowledge coordinator in Lubbock.

Dr. and Mrs. CHARLES BASSETT, Vice President Emeritus at Wayland, were on campus in June. Charles stills works on a part time basis for the University but they are living in Weatherford, Texas. They would love to hear from Wayland friends. ( 225 Charlie Way, Weatherford, TX 76087)

Dr. RICK BEELBY, FF, who previously served as coach of the Pioneer Track and Field Team and taught physical education at Wayland, received the Outstanding Faculty Award at Howard Payne University for 2005. DR. RICK BERRY, FF, was promoted to interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches in July. Berry has been associate provost and vice president since 2006 after serving as dean of the College of Fine Arts for seven years. Berry taught music at Wayland several years ago and has also taught at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, University of Texas at San Antonio and University of Denver. MILLIE BISHOP, former staff member and widow of the late Dr. J. IVYLOY BISHOP, had open heart surgery on April 19 and is recuperating in Austin. Christian love and sympathy to the family, friends and students of Dr. RAYMOND BLYTHE, professor of business administration at the Lubbock Campus, who went to be with the Lord on May 25. The funeral was in San Antonio. Dr. Blythe, a popular professor, had taught at the Lubbock Campus for five years. Among his survivors is his wife, Sonia. (6903 Gary, Lubbock, TX 79413)

Dr. SAM BOMAR BROWN, EX’61, FF, who taught on the music faculty from 1974-1978, has been awarded professor of music at Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama. He teaches studio voice, class voice, vocal pedagogy, the art song and English, Italian, German and French diction. Sam continues to be an active vocal performer including recent recitals at University of Alabama, Louisiana State University and as a guest performer with the Birmingham Youth Symphony Orchestra. Dr. BILL BURKETT, former development officer for Wayland, retired from Georgetown College in 1992 and, after two heart surgeries, he and a friend have two fund-raising consultant businesses. They have been working with Clear Creek Baptist Bible College for almost five years and are directing them in their second capital campaign. He is also working with Quest Farm, a farm for handicapped adults. They also do feasibility studies for other institutions and churches. At 75, Bill stays very busy. JERRY CAIN, FS, who served as director of admissions and director of the Association of Former Students from 1974-1977, and wife Linda visited the campus on July 5. They were on the way to Glorieta Conference Center, New Mexico, where Jerry was to lead a ministers conference. Jerry is president of Judson College in Elgin, Illinois. (850 N. DOUGLAS CLARK, who formerly taught sociology at Wayland, lives in Florida where he is retired.  Clark turned 88 in August.  His health continues to be good and he only had one period of hospitalization when he had bronchitis and viral pneumonia.  He and wife Betty made a trip to Illinois to visit friends and family and in October, took a 10 day cruise to Tahiti.  Clark has had several opportunities to preach and published articles every quarter in the “Gospel Herald.”  (2256 Danwood Drive, Spring Hill, FL  34606  E-mail:  dclark24@tampabay.rr.com)

JOSEPHINE COLLIER, former art professor at Wayland and widow of Dr. SHELBY COLLIER, founder of the International Choir, celebrated her 95th birthday on July 8. She is active and well in Dallas. (301 N. Waverly, Dallas, TX 75208)

Dr. ROBERT COLMER, dean of the college from 1961-1966, visited the campus in September with wife Alys. Dr. Collmer has retired after serving many years at Baylor University. (2801 Wooded Acres, Waco, TX 76710)

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of FLORRIE J. CONWAY, AA’40, Librarian Emeritus, who died on August 1, 2004, in San Angelo. She resided at Baptist Memorials Retirement Center and had been presented the Lifetime Service Alumni Award at the Christmas Party there in December, 2003. After graduating from Wayland with her AA degree, she earned her Bachelor’s degree at Baylor in 1942. She served as secretary at Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth and Memorial Baptist Church in Temple before returning to Plainview in 1944 as Pastor’s Secretary at First Baptist Church. When Dr. A. Hope Owen was tapped for the presidency at Wayland, he encouraged Florrie to earn her library science degree and join the staff at the college. She completed her Master of Library Science degree at University of Texas in 1955 and made her way back to Plainview to begin her 30-year tenure with Wayland. Florrie retired in 1985 and in a presentation to her the year before, the presenter stated, “She has had a greater influence on every Wayland student than any other person on campus for the last 28 years, for who among us has not spent some time in the library.” She was always an avid and loyal supporter of Wayland Baptist University. She led an exemplary life and served as role model for numerous students who came under her tutelage. Presiding over her graveside service in Plainview on August 4 was Dr. TRAVIS HART, BA’68, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Plainview. Assisting with her memorial service on August 9 at Baptist Memorials in San Angelo were Dr. KYLE REESE, BA’93, Pastor of First Baptist Church, San Angelo, and JOE PROVENCE, BA’66, Director of Alumni Services.

Christian love and sympathy to the family, friends and former students of Dr. JAMES C. COX, who died in Fort Worth on February 23, 2006.  He served as head of the Chemistry Department at Wayland from 1968-1976.  Listed in numerous Who’s Who publications including Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World, Dr. Cox also taught at the U. S. Naval Academy, Lamar University, University of Baghdad and Oral Roberts University.  Among his survivors are his wife of 60 years, ALMA, EX’73, three sons and two daughters.

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. JERRY DAWSON, EX’54,FF, former history professor at Wayland who died on June 17 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.  In addition to Wayland, Dr. Dawson served as president of East Texas Baptist University from 1976 to 1985.  After leaving ETBU, Dr. Dawson served all Texas Baptist Schools as director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas Christian Education Coordinating Board from 1986-1997 when he retired.  During his academic career, he also taught at Texas A&M University, University of Northern Colorado, Mississippi College, University of Texas and served as dean of the graduate school at Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University.  Among his survivors is his wife MARGIE, EX’54, three children and 9 grandchildren.  He will be greatly missed.  (4721 Oak Club Drive, Arlington, TX  76017  E-mail:  Margie-dawson@sbcglobal.net)

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Walida R. “Leda” DeLung, who died July 14 while visiting relatives in Wisconsin. She was an avid supporter of Wayland events and young people. Surviving are her husband, DICK DeLUNG, professor of sociology and justice administration at Wayland, and a son. Dr. BRUCE DOD, FF, former professor of physical sciences, has retired from Mercer University after teaching physics and earth sciences there for 27 years.  He taught for seven years at Wayland and says that he was fortunate to spend his career at “two of the best Baptist universities in the business.”  Bruce stays busy with stamp collecting, travels and doing Civil War re-enactments.  He can still be contacted at his Mercer e-mail address.  (dod_bd@mercer.edu)

BOB DUNAWAY, FF, former head of the art department at Wayland, is retired and lives in Clinton, Mississippi.  On October 7, 2006, he married a long time friend,  Mary Lynn Moody.  She is a retired teacher and a gifted photographer.  On December 10th, 2006, they opened a show together at Gulf South Gallery in McComb featuring her photographs and his paintings.  Bob wrote to inform that the Clinton Arts Council now has a website, www.artscouncilofclinton.org, which features local artists.  He is included and one can click “About Bob” to be taken to his portion of the web page.  (126 Morrison Drive, Clinton, MS  39056  E-mail:  badunaway@mindspring.com)

Brittney Blaine Ferguson, daughter of GAYLE FAWVER FERGUSON, FS, of Slaton spent Spring Break (2002) in New York City. She and the Slaton First United Methodist Church Youth Group spent six days in New York where they manned prayer stations at Ground Zero, fed the homeless, cleaned their host’s (Youth With A Mission - YWAM) facility and distributed food to the underprivileged. They attended worship services at Brooklyn Tabernacle where Dayna Curry and Heather Mercer, the two missionaries who were imprisoned in Afghanistan for witnessing, spoke. Brittney is a junior, honor student at Slaton High School. She has expressed an interest in pursuing mission work once she completes her education. Gayle, who was secretary to the Academic Vice President at Wayland from 1979-1981, is now a research coordinator at Texas Tech. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of MAXINE MARSH FOSTER, FS, who died on April 13 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. She was in full-time Christian service and moved to Wayland in 1963 when Dr. Roy C. McClung became president, serving as his secretary until 1975 when she married M.J. Foster. At that time, Maxine moved to Weston, West Virginia. In addition to her husband, Maxine is survived by two sisters and five brothers. She was active in her church and volunteer activities in her community. Maxine and M.J. had established a scholarship at Wayland.

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of TONY GARCIA, former director of the International Occupational Center at Wayland and served as chairman of the division of vocational and technical education.   He was 85 and died on June 5, 2005.

Dr. LANNY HALL, former president at Wayland and at Hardin-Simmons University, has been named president of Howard Payne University. He began his service on March 1, 2003. He had served as executive vice president and chief academic officer at HPU from 1986-1989 when he came to Wayland. Dr. Hall served as president of H-SU from 1991-2001 when he was named chancellor. He and wife Carol have two grown children, Lana Hall McCutchen of Abilene, and Chad of Fort Worth, and one grandchild, Lilly McCutchen. PHILLIP, FS, and URSULA GENTILE HAMILTON, BA’91, have purchased the Olton Enterprise newspaper and began publishing in September under their ownership. Phil is living in Olton, while Ursula and their three children, Sterling, Shiloh and Savannah, stay in Paris trying to sell their home. The family has lived in Paris, Texas, for five years while Phillip has served as managing editor for the Paris News. Phillip formerly worked at the Plainview Daily Herald and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and was public relations director at Wayland. Dr. JIM HANSFORD, FF, director of bands and professor of music at Wayland from 1982-1990, was installed as holder of the Burton H. Patterson Professorship in Music at Oklahoma Baptist University during fall convocation on August.  He has served as director of bands at OBU since 1990 and this is the only music professorship at the school.   A respected educator-conductor for over thirty-five years, Hansford stays active as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator in the public schools and churches of Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. At OBU, Hansford teaches advanced conducting, instrumental music education and applied low brass, in addition to serving as conductor of the Symphonic Band and the OBU-Shawnee Community Orchestra.  Hansford is an active member of First Baptist Church in Shawnee, where he sings in the choir and serves as a deacon. His wife, Conchita, a children's music specialist who directs the Shawnee Honor Choir, is Director of the Music Preparatory Department at OBU. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. "RED" HARDEN. Mr. Harden was business manager at Wayland and Mrs. Harden taught English from 1947-1957. Mrs. Harden died on December 17, 1999 and Mr. Harden died on May 7, 2000. The Hardens had lived in Riverside, California, where he was business manager and vice president of development before his retirement in 1978. In 1970, Mr. Harden was named Citizen of the Year in Riverside.

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of ETHEL HICKS, FS, who died on April 9, 2002, in Abilene, Texas, just days shy of her 98th birthday. Mrs. Hicks served as dormitory counselor at Wayland in both Agnes Mays Hall and Brotherhood Hall during a period from 1954-1962. She was married to A. L. HICKS, EX’35, who died in 1954. Among Mrs. Hicks survivors are three daughters who graduated from Wayland: MARIE HICKS STOCKARD, AA’42, ALICE HICKS SCARBOROUGH, AA’46, BA’66, and LOUISE HICKS STREET, AA’48. Dr. F. DOUGLAS HOLCOMBE, associate professor of business administration, has resigned his Wayland position to become director of the east region in Central Michigan University’s College of Extended Learning. The east region includes external campuses in Virginia, Maryland, District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, and Ohio. The east region director's headquarter staff includes nine professional administrators and assistants, six full-time faculty members, and ten academic advisors. Congratulations to BEVERLY HOUSTON, coordinator of development and recruiting at the San Antonio Campus, on her selection to the San Antonio Women’s Celebration and Hall of Fame. The event was established in 1984 and evolved from Governor Mark White and the Governor’s Commission for Women. The organization recognizes and honors outstanding women who have helped shape San Antonio by contributing their talents and skills to the city’s growth and development. The selection process is detailed and is conducted by the Board of Directors and Executive Committee Members through lengthy application accomplishment packages and verification of same; and their extensive background check. This year marked the 20th Anniversary of the San Antonio Women Celebration and Hall of Fame with the formal induction ceremony on March 24, 2004.

Mr. and Mrs. NICK HOWARD, FS (SUSAN, FS) have left the mission field in Germany and moved to Houston. Nick, who was former BSU director at Wayland, has been named director of Baptist Student Ministries at Rice University. (8830 Braewick, Houston, TX 77074)

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of PAULINE JAMES, FF, who taught art at Wayland from 1952-1954, who died in 1999.  Her husband, Dr. H. Preston James, was dean of the college at that time.  He died in 1995.  Among their survivors is a daughter, Judith James Murdoch, who attended the Wayland Nursery as a one-year-old.

Dr. and Mrs. DAN KENT, FF (BARBARA, BA’79) visited the Wayland booth during the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship meeting in Atlanta in June. They are Texas coordinators for the CBF. When they returned to their home in Fort Worth, Dr. Kent had a heart attack on July 4 and the resulting angiogram revealed blockage in the three main arteries in the heart. He underwent triple bypass surgery on August 8 after a month of total rest. He is making a good recovery according to Barbara. (Email: DrDGKent@cs.com)

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of ORBA LEE MALONE, EX’40, FT, who died in El Paso on June 27, 2003 at age 82. He began practicing law in El Paso in 1947, becoming a prominent attorney and community leader. Malone held many leadership roles in the community. He served 12 years on the board of trustees of the El Paso Independent School District ('66-'78) and was Vice-President ('70 -'78). He was a founding director and Vice-President of the board of trustees of the Lee and Beulah Moor Children's Home ('57 - '03), and served the Child Welfare Board of El Paso County ('53-'62) and the YMCA's Board of Directors ('54-'64). He helped found and incorporate the Rescue Mission of El Paso, was a charter director of the Pastoral Counseling Service of El Paso, and served many other civic groups and assisted in the organization of many other churches and non-profit associations in the El Paso area. Malone had a general law practice, with a personal interest in family law and adoptions. He was well respected by his fellow attorneys, and his clients appreciated him as a caring, well-prepared advocate. He helped hundreds of families in the adoption of children. He was President of the El Paso Bar Association ('68), and chaired the Family Law Council of the State Bar of Texas during the rewriting and enactment of the Texas Family Code ('69). In 1995, he received the Outstanding Senior Lawyer from the El Paso Bar Association. His lifetime interest in education was displayed in several ways. At 31 years of age, Malone became the youngest-ever member of the Baylor University Board of Trustees. He was an early advocate for racial integration, and led in Baylor's admittance of the first black student/athlete in the Southwest Conference in 1964. Mr. Malone also served 14 years ('82 -'95) as a trustee of Wayland and received the university's Distinguished Service Alumnus Award in 2000. Malone was a devoted deacon at First Baptist Church, serving multiple terms as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was a Sunday School teacher for more than 40 years, and received the church's "Wall of Fame" honor in 1998. He was also extremely active in both Texas and Southern Baptist Life, chairing the Christian Life Commission of both the Southern Baptist Convention ('65) and the Baptist General Convention of Texas ('67). Born in Milo in the Texas panhandle on August 2, 1920, he was the oldest male of nine children. After attending Wayland, Mr. Malone graduated from Baylor School of Law in Waco in 1942. He married Peggy Pounds on April 23, 1943, and shortly thereafter became a first Lieutenant in the 20th Air Force, piloting a B-29 on twenty-five missions to Japan in WWII. He was preceded in death by his first wife Peggy Pounds Malone in 1989, his son Paul in 1980, and his brother Robert Clinton (RC) who gave his life in WWII. Among his survivors is his wife, Lillian, three sons, a daughter and step-daughter, seven brothers and sisters, including: Dr. SAMUEL J. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of TROY MAYS, longtime friend of Wayland, who died on September 15, 2006, in Amarillo.  He was head of the Mays Foundation and supported Wayland in many ways, following in the path of his father, the late Arlie Mays, a longtime Wayland trustee.  In 2004, the Association of Former Students at Wayland presented Troy and the Mays Foundation with the Distinguished Benefactor Alumni Award.

Dr. ROY C. McCLUNG, president emeritus, is living in Louisville, Kentucky with wife Betty and is doing well, though he writes that they have about had it with cold weather. They were heading to Florida for a month to thaw out. He completed his book on McClung Family History last year and has placed a copy in Mabee Learning Resources Center at Wayland. Dr. McClung is currently putting together a volume of speaker’s “illustrations” and has about 1000 of these in format and ready to go. He plans to add a couple of hundred more and get it ready for printing. Dr. McClung is always eager to hear about Wayland and Wayland people. Christian love and sympathy to the former students and co-workers of Dr. DOROTHY McCOY, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics who died on November 21 in Plainview. Dr. McCoy was the only Distinguished Professor Emeritus and was the first recipient of the Distinguished Lifetime Service Award from the Association of Former Students. Everyone has their own favorite story and remembrance of Dr. McCoy who began her teaching career at Wayland in 1949. In September, the University dedicated McCoy Hall, an honors women’s dormitory, in her honor. On September 14, Dr. McCoy and Dr. HAROLD REESE, Professor Emeritus of Biological and Earth Science, were the first two inductees of the Division of Mathematics and Science Hall of Honor at Wayland. She will be missed. Memorials are requested to the Dorothy McCoy Mathematics Scholarship at Wayland.

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of BEVERLY MERCER McLAUGHLIN, who taught voice at Wayland from 1956-1968. She was living in Colville, Washington when she died suddenly on March 5, 2004, of a stroke and congestive heart failure. She married Ed McLaughlin while teaching at Wayland in 1957. They had a son, Roger, in 1941. Beverly continued to teach private music when she moved to Bay City, Texas, in 1962 and to Colville, Washington, in 1995. She was involved in conservation, was a defender of animal rights and loved photography and music.

Dr. and Mrs. ED McMILLAN,are retired and living in Clinton, Mississippi.  Dr. McMillan taught social science, history and American studies at Wayland from 1951-1961.  Carnette worked in the Business Office and the English office.  After Wayland, they moved to Louisiana College where they served for 12 years and then to Mississippi College where Dr. McMillan taught history and served as vice president.  They would love to hear from Wayland friends and former students.  (117 Brookside Circle, Clinton, MS  39056)

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of E. MAYS OSBORNE, FT, who died on June 23, 2002. He was 106. Mr. Osborne, with his family, was a longtime supporter of Wayland. He served on the Board of Trustees for 32 years, was recipient of the Merit Award from the university in 1960 for “contributions of time, effort and financial support,” and the Association of Former Students Distinguished Benefactor Alumni Award in 1992. Mr. Osborne and his first wife, LAURA HIGGINBOTHAM OSBORNE, gave their elegant home in 1967 to Wayland to house the president. It still houses Wayland’s president today. Mr. Osborne was active in many civic groups and affairs. His last wife was FRANCES BIER BROWN OSBORNE, EX’29. She died on July 12, 2001. Congratulations to MARK PAIR, who continues to thrill Plainview and area audiences with his superb piano talents. He has been honored with an endowed music scholarship at Wayland. Mark taught piano at Wayland from 1966 until his retirement in 2002. He continues to play a mini-concert each Sunday morning in the Pastor’s Class at First Baptist Church where he is the pianist. During his Wayland tenure, Mark taught almost 1200 private piano students in addition to his other classes. ANN QUALLS, widow of Dr. BUCKLEY QUALLS, former professor in the division of education, lives in Gretna, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans.   She moved there in the fall of 2004 to be near son Roy and his family and she is enjoying her grandchildren.   Ann spends six months a year volunteering at the Green Lake Conference Center in Green Lake Wisconsin, in the crafts center.  She teaches china decorating.  She writes that the Center is large and beautiful with lake recreational activities, biking and hiking to add to the spiritual offerings.  They are in cooperation with Saddle Back Church in California and Willow Creek in Chicago.  They have a youth camp for the inner city kids of Chicago.  It is run in the summer by volunteers.
