TYRONE JOHNSON, BSOE'04, who graduated from the San Antonio Campus, is president and CEO of TVD Enterprises, Inc., a service oriented small disabled veteran owned business that provides first aid training, safety training, academic advisement, driving safety classes, medical and training consulting. He is currently pursuing his master of business administration degree through Webster University. Tyrone was a medical instructor with the U.S. Army until his retirement in July, 1995. He has more than 27 years as a nurse trainer and instructor. He is an ordained minister and a disabled veteran of the 1990 Gulf War. Tyroneserves as a member of the San Antonio Water Community Conservation Committee, as a member of the San Antonio Traffic Jam Coalition and has recently been approved by City Councilman Roger O. Navy Chief Petty Officer MICHAEL J. LANDRY, AAS’00, who graduated from the San Antonio Campus, recently departed on a routine, scheduled deployment to the Mediterranean Sea while assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Cole, homeported in Norfolk, Va. They recently visited Naval Station Rota, Spain, and had the opportunity to visit several historical landmarks and shop at various local markets. The Cole's port visit is the ship's first since undergoing $250 million in repairs following a bombing in the port of Yemen, October 12, 2000. The primary mission of Landry's ship is to provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities. Cole is capable of operating independently or as part of a carrier strike group. Its flexibility provides presence with a purpose and strike power to support joint and allied forces afloat and ashore. Landry's ship will be joining the 6,500 Sailors and Marines already deployed aboard the ships of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group. GENE LANE, BA’01, is living in Spicewood, Texas, where he is working in guest services at Highland Lakes Camp and Conference Center. He has been on staff for about two years and his job “kinda floats with the season.” He makes sure that the guests needs are met, does the computer work at the camp, works the archery range and the challenge course. Gene says that his job may range to leading devotionals, cleaning a dormitory or running a concession stand, but he loves it and says that it has been a real blessing. MIKE LEE, BA'03, is serving as a missionary journeyman with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He is serving in South Africa. He has completed his first year and has been teaching and coaching. Recently he attended a mandatory men's meeting for the Southern Africa Region that was held in Johannesburg and he reported a good week. Following the meeting, he went with other journeymen to Harare, Zimbabwe. Following that trip, he went with four others to Victoria Falls and they braved the Zambezi River. STEVEN MATZEN, MAM’04, missed his graduation at Hawaii Campus in May because he had been deployed to Afghanistan with the U. S. Army. During his last class at Wayland, he came to class and then left to return to the field for training and literally did his homework by flashlight while getting ready to go into combat. Dr. Steven Reid, dean of the Hawaii Campus, says that Steven would often come to class wiping off camouflage paint and grime because he really wanted to finish before he shipped out. Steven sent a note to staff and classmates saying that he would be at the ceremony in spirit. JOHN L. MOORE, BSOE’00, who graduated from the Amarillo Campus, is a United States Marshall in Tyler, Texas. He recently was speaker for a lecture at the Red River Historical Museum on “History of the U.S. Marshals Along the Red River.” In 2001, John was appointed by President George W. Bush as the U.S. Marshal for the eastern District of Texas. He has served as a city, county, state and federal law enforcement officer for the State of Texas which included duty as a police officer with the cities of Amarillo, Plainview and Littlefield. In addition, he was Deputy Sheriff in Potter County, Texas and served as a Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper. Prior to his appointment as U.S. Marshal, Moore spent 20 years as a Deputy U.S. Marshal in the eastern and Northern Federal Judicial District of Texas. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of MARIO MORENO, BSOE’02, a San Antonio police officer who was killed in the line of duty in September 2007. A graduate of the San Antonio campus, Mario was an 11-year veteran of the SAPD and had been promoted to detective in June. San Antonio Dean Dr. Jim Antenen noted that Mario was the second WBU graduate to die in the line of duty in San Antonio. The campus named a graduation award after Hector Garza, the last SAPD officer to die on duty, who died in March 2001. Moreno is survived by his wife, Alena, a son, Nicholas, 11, and a daughter, Elizabeth, 3.
