Those people have an effect on you whether they hurt you and make you stronger or encourage you to be the best you can be. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of JOANNE DUNBAR, BSOE'04, who graduated from the Fairbanks, Alaska Campus, and died just 11 days after receiving her diploma in October, 2004, after a valiant fight against cancer. In November, she was presented, posthumously, the Golden Nugget Award by the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, an award designed to honor a member for their outstanding support of efforts to make Fairbanks a better place to live, work and play, and recognize contributions to the economic growth and strength of the community. It was the first time that the award had been presented posthumously. Dr. JOHN COPELAND, dean of the Fairbanks Campus, was asked to make the presentation to his friend and former student. Joanne first came to Alaska with the U. S. Army and stayed. In 2002, she joined the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce as membership marketing manager. While working full-time, Joanne was raising three children Michael, Ridge and Ashley, as a single mother and attending Wayland to complete her bachelor's degree. "The person I met immediately and deeply impressed me, and the student soon became my friend. Wayland’s classes are largely held in the evenings and on weekends. I watched Joanne come straight from chemotherapy into a four-hour class that started at 6pm. And she did that week after week, while raising three children as a single Mom. She was, and continues to be, an inspiration to the lives of those who knew her," Dr. Copeland said. When he questioned Joanne about her determination to complete her degree, she answered, "I have two legacies to leave to my children: First, I want them to know of my faith in Jesus Christ, because He is the one who has sustained me in my times of greatest trial. He is my assurance of life, even as I face death. Second, I want them to know that no matter how tough life gets, you never, ever, ever Quit! You pursue your dreams and your goals with all that is in you.” Joanne retired from the Chamber in May, 2004 to focus on her health, her family, and her education.
